Leaf samples were collected from 40 accessions of Chenopodium spp. and assessed for six heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr and Cd) accumulation to explore the use of Chenopodium for phytoextraction of heavy metals. The results suggest that Chenopodium spp. have the ability to accumulate large quantities of heavy metals in the leaf tissues even when they are present in low concentrations in the soil. C. quinoa is a better accumulator of Ni, Cr and Cd than the rest of the species, while C. album accessions are good copper accumulators. Bioconcentration factor for chromium ranged from 0.36 (C. album “Chandanbathua”) to 6.57 (C. quinoa Ames 13719) with 13 accessions of C. quinoa scoring above the mean value. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was recorded for Ni, Cr and Cd, which indicated a major role of additive gene action in the inheritance of these characters. Zinc showed significant positive association with iron (0.351**), nickel (0.659**), chromium (0.743**) and cadmium (0.288**). Nickel was significantly and negatively associated with copper (−0.663**), while it was positively and significantly correlated with chromium (0.682**) and cadmium (0.461**). Considering the accumulation efficiency of Chenopodium spp. with respect to heavy metals, this genus should be further explored for decontamination of metal polluted soils, with plant breeding playing an important role in evolving new plant types with higher capacity of heavy metal accumulation.

However, the availability of pulses had declined from 64 g to less than 37 g as against the recommendation of 80 g per capita per day. It is estimated that the Indian population will touch nearly 1350 million by 2020 A.D. and country' would then need a minimum of 30.0 million tones of pulses, as against today's pulses production of 28.17 million tones (Anonymous, 2013). Genetic Estimates and Character Association Studies in Field Pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Determination of heterosis in maize hybrids is necessary for their commercial exploitation. Data derived from several experiments namely Coordinated Varietal Trial-Hybrid (CVTH), Diallel Crosses, Observation Nurseries (OBN), Top Crosses and Test Crosses conducted at Rampur (Chitwan) and Parwanipur (Bara) from 2004/05 to 2008/09 were complied to determine heterosis and identify high yielding hybrids. The maize hybrids namely RML-4/RML-7, RML-5/NML-1, NML-2/RML-6, RML- 6/RML-7, RML-5/RL-47, RML-8/RL-47, RML-5/RML-8, NML-1/RML-17, RML-7/RML-18, RML- 6/RML-18 and RML-5/NML-1 produced high heterosis (greater than 40%) indicating these hybrids superior for commercial cultivation.

Ten F1 hybrids and their F2 populations obtained from a diallel mating of 5 table pea varieties were grown at vegetable section Kalianpur of Uttar Pradesh Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Kanpur in a randomized block design with three replications during 1970–71. The heterosis in F1 and inbreeding depression in F2 were studied in respect of plant length, pod length, pod width, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and yield of green pod per plant. Significant heterosis and inbreeding depression was observed in many of the crosses for all the characters examined and pronounced effects were found for yield per plant and number of pods per plant. The crosses which showed manifestation of high degree of heterosis also exhibited inbreeding depression in F2.
