The genus Lolium comprises many species, of which L. perenne ssp. multiflorum, L. perenne ssp. perenne, and L. rigidum are of worldwide agricultural importance as both pasture crops and as weeds. These three species are inter-fertile, obligate out-crossers with a self-incompatible reproduction system. This combination contributes to high genetic diversity that supplies new variants during expansion to new natural areas and agricultural environments. Human dispersal, de-domestication and crop-weed hybridization events between Lolium spp., or with others such as Festuca spp., are likely associated with their distinct weediness abilities. Furthermore, new introductions followed by introgression may hasten adaptation to new environments. Most Lolium-related weed science studies have focused on adaptation leading to herbicide resistance, but other forms of adaptation may also occur. In this review, we explore how the wide genetic variation among Lolium species and hybridization with other species may contribute to range expansion, and adaptation to both new agricultural practices and future predicted climate change scenarios. © 2020 The Authors. Review: evolutionary drivers of agricultural adaptation in Lolium spp.

Soil microbial and chemical responses to foliar Epichloë fungal infection in Lolium perenne, Hordeum brevisubulatum and Achnatherum inebrians

Increasing the efficiency of current forage breeding programs through adoption of new technologies, such as genomic selection (GS) and phenomics (Ph), is challenging without proof of concept demonstrating cost effective genetic gain (∆G). This paper uses decision support software DeltaGen (tactical tool) and QU-GENE (strategic tool), to model and assess relative efficiency of five breeding methods. The effect on ∆G and cost ($) of integrating GS and Ph into an among half-sib (HS) family phenotypic selection breeding strategy was investigated. Deterministic and stochastic modelling were conducted using mock data sets of 200 and 1000 perennial ryegrass HS families using year-by-season-by-location dry matter (DM) yield data and in silico generated data, respectively. Results demonstrated short (deterministic)- and long-term (stochastic) impacts of breeding strategy and integration of key technologies, GS and Ph, on ∆G. These technologies offer substantial improvements in the rate of ∆G, and in some cases improved cost-efficiency. Applying 1% within HS family GS, predicted a 6.35 and 8.10% ∆G per cycle for DM yield from the 200 HS and 1000 HS, respectively. The application of GS in both among and within HS selection provided a significant boost to total annual ∆G, even at low GS accuracy rA of 0.12. Despite some reduction in ∆G, using Ph to assess seasonal DM yield clearly demonstrated its impact by reducing cost per percentage ∆G relative to standard DM cuts. Open-source software tools, DeltaGen and QuLinePlus/QU-GENE, offer ways to model the impact of breeding methodology and technology integration under a range of breeding scenarios.

Deterministic and stochastic modelling of impacts from genomic selection and phenomics on genetic gain for perennial ryegrass dry matter yield.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) vegetative persistence (maintained herbage growth and survival without reseeding) is an important economic trait for farmers in New Zealand as it decreases the frequency of reseeding pastures. Vegetative persistence is difficult to breed for due to a lack of long-term trials to observe the complex interactions between plant genotype and the environment. In a long-term trial a genetic shift in the sown cultivar population could occur as individual plants with advantageous traits outcompete other plants and survive. The objectives of our study were to investigate the occurrence of a potential genetic shift in a sample (30 plants) of a persistent population of ‘Grasslands Samson’ perennial ryegrass. Persistent plants were collected from a nine-year-old trial at Poukawa, Hawke's Bay. To identify a genetic shift, these plants were compared to a sample of 30 plants sourced from commercial seed of ‘Grasslands Samson’ representing the original population. This study estimated genotypic variation within and between the populations for eight morphological traits after 10 weeks' growth under glasshouse conditions. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations between the traits were estimated. Results showed that the persistent population had significantly (P<0.05) greater means for tiller number, reproductive tiller number, lamina sheath length, and dry weight. Future research studying these traits across farm environments would further understanding of their roles in vegetative persistence of ryegrass.

Identifying morphological traits associated with vegetative persistence in the perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivar 'Grasslands Samson'

Leveraging multi-harvest data for increasing genetic gains per unit of time for fruit yield and resistance to witches’ broom in Theobroma grandiflorum

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) provides a cost-effective forage species for New Zealand farms. Vegetative persistence (maintained herbage growth and survival without reseeding) is an important trait for decreasing costs of pasture establishment. Breeding for vegetative persistence is difficult because of a deficiency of long-term trials to observe the complex interactions between plant genotype and environment. Over time in a long-term trial, a shift in the genetic mean of a cultivar could occur as plants with genetically enhanced persistence traits survive. This study aimed to identify a shift in the genetic mean of two cultivars sown in a long-term trial in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Plots of 1 m rows were assessed in a trial for 13 months to compare changes in additive genetic variation ($$\upsigma_{\text{a}}^{2}$$), narrow-sense heritability ($${\text{h}}_{\text{n}}^{2}$$), and trait associations of half-sib (HS) populations generated from “Persistent” plants and commercially bought seed of “Original” cultivars Grasslands Samson and Commando. Significant (P < 0.05) $$\upsigma_{\text{a}}^{2}$$ and high levels of $${\text{h}}_{\text{n}}^{2}$$ for some populations were identified for scores of herbage growth, leaf width, plant habit and aftermath heading. This study found genetic shifts over time were cultivar specific. Traits that were different between Persistent and Original populations were previously associated with decreased pasture intake. Trait associations and cluster analysis identified HS families that could be used for developing enhanced persistence.
