This paper aims to provide an overview of the experimental and simulation works focused on the detection, localisation and assessment of various defects in pipes by applying fast-screening guided ultrasonic wave techniques that have been used in the oil and gas industries over the past 20 years. Major emphasis is placed on limitations, capabilities, defect detection in coated buried pipes under pressure and corrosion monitoring using different commercial guided wave (GW) systems, approaches to simulation techniques such as the finite element method (FEM), wave mode selection, excitation and collection, GW attenuation, signal processing and different types of GW transducers. The effects of defect parameters on reflection coefficients are also discussed in terms of different simulation studies and experimental verifications.

Detection, Localisation and Assessment of Defects in Pipes Using Guided Wave Techniques: A Review.

A novel numerical procedure is presented in this paper to study wave scattering problem by circumferential cracks in steel pipes. The study is motivated by the need to develop a quantitative ultrasonic technique to characterise properties of cracks in pipes. By employing wave function expansion in axial direction and decomposing the problem into a symmetry problem and an antisymmetry problem, a three-dimensional wave scattering problem is then reduced into two quasi-one-dimensional problems. This simplification greatly reduces the computational time. Numerical results for reflection and transmission coefficients of different incident wave modes are presented here for a steel pipe with cracks (may have arbitrary circumferential crack length and radial crack depth) and they are shown to agree quite closely with available but limited experimental data.

Scattering of Guided Waves by Circumferential Cracks in Steel Pipes

To study the feasibility of detecting pipeline multi-cracks damage using piezoceramic transducers, the electromechanical impedance method and the stress wave based active sensing method were used respectively to perform the damage detection of pipeline with multi-cracks. In this research, the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) type transducers were used due to its strong piezoelectric effect and low cost. During the experiments, two artificial cracks on the pipeline specimen were created, ranging from 0 mm to 9 mm, and seven different operating conditions were generated for each artificial crack. In the monitoring test, for the electromechanical impedance method, the damage index based on Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) was used, and for the active sensing method, the damage index based on Wavelet Packet Energy Loss (WPEL) was used. In addition, the relationship between the crack depth and RMSD as well as the relationship between the crack depth and location and WPEL were analyzed. The results show that RMSD and WPEL indices increase with the increase of the depth of pipeline cracks. In addition, the WPEL index increases with the appearance of new cracks. Quantitative analysis of pipeline crack damage can be realized by electromechanical impedance method, and localization analysis on the pipeline multi-cracks damage can be achieved by stress wave method based on sensor arrays.
