Transition metal titanium (Ti) doped LaFeO3 nanoparticles for enhanced optical structural and magnetic properties

Electrochemical reduction is an eco-friendly alternative for energy-saving artificial N2 fixation. The development of this process requires efficient N2 reduction reaction (NRR) electrocatalysts to overcome the challenge with N2 activation. We show that a Cr2O3 nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide hybrid (Cr2O3-rGO) is as an outstanding catalyst for electrochemical N2-to-NH3 conversion under ambient conditions. In 0.1 M HCl, Cr2O3-rGO achieves a high NH3 yield of 33.3 μg h–1 mg–1cat. at −0.7 V vs RHE and a high Faradaic efficiency of 7.33% at −0.6 V vs RHE, with excellent selectivity for NH3 synthesis and stability. Density functional theory calculations were executed to gain further insight into the mechanisms.

Cr2O3 Nanoparticle-Reduced Graphene Oxide Hybrid: A Highly Active Electrocatalyst for N2 Reduction at Ambient Conditions.

Cr2O3 nanoparticles, widely used in the industry, can be obtained by calcination of the nanoparticles synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The chemical nature and the morphology of as-prepared and calcined nanoparticles are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Our results indicate that the as-prepared nanoparticles mainly consist of amorphous and hydrated Cr(OH)(3), with only minor amounts of Cr2O3. By contrast, and as already known before, calcined nanoparticles consist of Cr2O3. We also demonstrate the effect of inappropriately chosen experimental conditions, because the use of laser intensities above 0.7 mW during the Raman experiments causes a local heating and thus induces the transformation of Cr(OH)(3) into Cr2O3. The correlation between the laser power and a local heating is further corroborated by thermogravimetric analyses, which show that upon increased temperature, Cr(OH)(3) first dehydrates and then partially condensates to the intermediate CrO(OH) form, to finally attain the crystalline form of Cr2O3 at about 409 degrees C.

A micro-Raman spectroscopic study of Cr(OH)(3) and Cr2O3 nanoparticles obtained by the hydrothermal method

Sometimes, searching for a cost efficient bifunctional catalytic material for water splitting can be accomplished from a very unlikely place. In this work, we are reporting such a discovery of utilizing the stainless steel (SS) scrubber directly as a catalytic electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of water electrolysis in 1 M KOH. The iR corrected overpotential calculated at an areal current density of 10 mA cm–2 for a SS scrubber in HER is 315 mV which is 273 mV higher than Pt/C. Similarly, the SS scrubber required 418 mV at 10 mA cm–2 which is just 37 and 98 mV higher than Ni(OH)2 and RuO2. Interestingly, the kinetic analysis revealed that the SS scrubber had facile kinetics for both HER and OER in 1 M KOH as reflected by their corresponding Tafel slope values viz., 121 and 63 mV dec–1, respectively.
