One of the most important problems of hybrid h-p adaption in finite element electromagnetics has been the accurate and efficient resolution of the singularities associated with sharp material edges and corners. One of the key obstacles has been the lack of objective standards by which to evaluate and compare adaptive control strategies. A set of optimal adaption benchmarks for the fundamental electromagnetic point and line singularity models is presented. The primary adaption procedures and control schemes are evaluated and compared. The absolute and relative performance of the competing approaches is discussed. >

Mesh generation and refinement for FEM and BEM: a bibliography (1990–1993)

The mesh generation process for two-dimensional problems is discussed. A mesh generator based on expert system methods is presented. For every corner of a closed polygon the corner-angle conditions are analyzed and different types of mesh primitives are generated. In every step of the mesh generation the conflict with the existing mesh is recognized, and an optimal action will be chosen. Thus, any area surrounded by a polygon, even those with a very sophisticated contour, can be successfully covered with a basis mesh. This mesh is improved by side-swapping and node-shifting algorithms, both optimizing the shape of the elements and the location of the nodes. Problem-oriented adaptive mesh refinement algorithms provide further optimization according to suitable criteria. >

Automatic mesh generation based on expert-system-methods

Various sources of error in the finite-element method are examined. It is shown that the approximation of the vector potential, the discretization of the mesh, and the boundary discontinuity of H/sub t/ can have a great influence on the accuracy of different quantities. Local and integral quantities on the derivative of the potential, such as forces and torques, are especially affected. To reduce these errors higher-order elements or adaptive mesh refinement processes can be used. A method is developed which uses a local adaptive refinement technique in the important region. >
