[1] With the current data availability from both ground- and space-based sources, the network of ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, GPS occultation receivers, in situ electron density sensors, and dual-frequency beacon transmitters, the time is right for a comprehensive review of the history, current state, and future directions of ionospheric imaging. A brief introduction and history of ionospheric imaging is presented, beginning with computerized ionospheric tomography. Then, a comprehensive review of the current state of ionospheric imaging is presented. The ability of imaging algorithms to ingest multiple types of data and use advanced inverse techniques borrowed from meteorological data assimilation to produce four-dimensional images of electron density is discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the mathematical basis for the different methods. The science that ionospheric imaging addresses is discussed, and the scientific contributions that ionospheric imaging has made are described. Finally, future directions for this research area are outlined.

History, current state, and future directions of ionospheric imaging

Observing the Global Positioning System with a satellite in low earth orbit in an occulting geometry provides a powerful means of imaging the ionosphere. Tomographic imaging of the ionosphere from space and ground is examined using singular value decomposition analysis. The resolution and covariance matrices are examined, and simulations are performed that indicate that space data are significantly more effective than ground data in resolving both horizontal and vertical structures, such as the E layer, can be probed with occultation data.©1994 John Wiley & Sons Inc

Imaging the ionosphere with the global positioning system

Tomographic processing of path integral electron density records is emerging as a viable tool for ionospheric research. Tomographic processors fall into at least two major classes: those applying the Radon transform and those employing linear algebraic matrix inversion. In this paper we apply one of the latter, the “weighted, damped, least squares” technique of stochastic inversion, to two simulated but realistic data sets. This method, which repeatedly has been applied successfully to ocean acoustic tomography, is particularly suited to solving inverse problems in geophysics because it provides an orderly mechanism for judicious use of a priori or external information to complement sparse or nonuniform path integral data. The limited range of angles through which the ionosphere may be viewed on satellite-to-ground paths represents such a nonuniformity in ionospheric tomography. The method also provides means for estimating uncertainty in the image field, uncertainty which itself is nonuniform.

Application of stochastic inverse theory to ionospheric tomography

The ionospheric F2-layer peak density (NmF2) and its height (hmF2) are of great influence on the shape of the ionospheric electron density profile Ne (h) and may be indicative of other physical processes within the ionosphere, especially those due to geomagnetic storms. Such parameters are often estimated using models such as the semiempirical international reference ionosphere (IRI) models or are measured using moderately priced to expensive instrumentation, such as ionosondes or incoherent scatter radars. Global positioning system (GPS) observations have become a powerful tool for mapping high-resolution ionospheric structures, which can be used to study the ionospheric response to geomagnetic storms. In this paper, we describe how 3-D ionospheric electron density profiles were produced from data of the dense permanent Korean GPS network using the tomography reconstruction technique. These profiles are verified by independent ionosonde data. The responses of GPS-derived parameters at the ionospheric F2-layer to the 20th November 2003 geomagnetic storm over South Korea are investigated. A fairly large increase in the electron density at the F2-layer peak (the NmF2) (positive storm) has been observed during this storm, which is accompanied by a significant uplift in the height of the F2 layer peak (the hmF2). This is confirmed by independent ionosonde observations. We suggest that the F2-layer peak height uplift and NmF2 increase are mainly associated with a strong eastward electric field, and are not associated with the increase of the O/N2 ratio obtained from the GUVI instruments aboard the TIMED satellite. It is also inferred that the increase in NmF2 is not caused by the changes in neutral composition, but is related to other nonchemical effects, such as dynamical changes of vertical ion motions induced by winds and E × B drifts, tides and waves in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere region, which can be dynamically coupled upward to generate ionospheric perturbations and oscillations.

GPS observations of the ionospheric F2-layer behavior during the 20th November 2003 geomagnetic storm over South Korea

The ionosphere affects the electromagnetic waves that pass through it by inducing an additional transmission time delay. The ionosphere influence has now become the largest error source in GPS positioning and navigation after the turn-off of the Selective Availability (SA). In this paper, methods of 2D grid-based and 3D tomography-based ionospheric modeling are developed based on regional GPS reference networks. Performance analysis was conducted using data from two different regional GPS reference networks. The modeling accuracy of the vertical TEC (VTEC) is at the level of several TECU for 2D ionospheric modeling and about one TECU for 3D tomographic modeling after a comparison to independent ionospheric map data or directly measured ionospsheric TEC values. The data analysis has indicated that the modeling accuracy based on the 3D tomography method is much higher than the 2D grid-based approach.

Precise Ionosphere Modeling Using Regional GPS Network Data

Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) measurements, obtained simultaneously at several locations, can be processed using computerized tomography (CT) algorithms to obtain two-dimensional images of ionospheric electron density. Using TEC data, computerized ionospheric tomography (CIT) reconstructs an image of the electron density structures in a vertical slice above the receiving stations. We successfully applied this technique to realistic simulations of ionospheric density variations over 16° of latitude and a height range of 50 to 1000 km. A method for approximating the peak height and scale height of the electron density profile will be discussed as well as a reconstruction technique based on the multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique algorithm and a back projection based initial guess. The quality of reconstructions is considered for two geometries and image resolutions. In particular, the image of a mid-latitude trough with background horizontal density gradient and large-scale irregular structures has been reconstructed from TEC data generated from a model based on an incoherent scatter radar observation. The CT reconstructed image was compared with the original contour map obtained by the incoherent scatter radar. Good agreement has been achieved. The CIT technique has also been applied to a modeled ionosphere to calculate the range rate corrections for a Doppler-tracking radar.

Application of computerized tomography to the investigation of ionospheric structures

: In this paper the background of computerized tomography (CT) and its application to the ionosphere is reviewed. CT techniques, using only total electron content (TEC) data, can be used to reconstruct a two-dimensional image of the electron density in the ionosphere. The limitations of this technique are discussed and examples showing the limitations and capabilities are presented. Simulation results for two applications are presented: imaging the high latitude trough, and the correction of tracking radar range rate errors. Some possible extensions of the technique are presented.
