TL;DR: The sex attractant pheromone for western poplar clearwing, Paranthrene robiniae (Hy. Edwards), was identified by field trapping, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and electroantennography to be approximately a 4:1 ratio of ( E,Z):(Z,Z)-3, 13-octadecadienyl alcohols.
Abstract: The sex attractant pheromone for western poplar clearwing, Paranthrene robiniae (Hy. Edwards), was identified by field trapping, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and electroantennography to be approximately a 4:1 ratio of ( E ,Z):(Z,Z)-3, 13-octadecadienyl alcohols. Efficient attraction of male P. robiniae requires that both alcohol components be present. The blend of the 2 synthetic components should provide a sensitive and effective lure for monitoring western poplar clearwing moth populations.
