A survey of post-peterson stress concentration factor data

A special-purpose, semi-analytical solution method for determining the stress and deformation fields in a thin laminated-composite cylindrical shell with an elliptical cutout is presented. The analysis includes the effects of cutout size, shape, and orientation; non-uniform wall thickness; oval-cross-section eccentricity; and loading conditions. The loading conditions include uniform tension, uniform torsion, and pure bending. The analysis approach is based on the principle of stationary potential energy and uses Lagrange multipliers to relax the kinematic admissibility requirements on the displacement representations through the use of idealized elastic edge restraints. Specifying appropriate stiffness values for the elastic extensional and rotational edge restraints (springs) allows the imposition of the kinematic boundary conditions in an indirect manner, which enables the use of a broader set of functions for representing the displacement fields. Selected results of parametric studies are presented for several geometric parameters that demonstrate that analysis approach is a powerful means for developing design criteria for laminated-composite shells.

Since the Haifa conference, which included a presentation (1) on some preliminary thermoelastic stress analysis work, the considerable potential of the SPATE (Stress Pattern Analysis by the measurement of Thermal Emission) technique has been explored and the technique itself has been considerably developed At present there are some 20 equipments in use in Europe (including the UK), 20 in the USA and Canada, and 7 elsewhere including Australia and Japan The important role of this major new development in stress analysis and design appraisal studies has now been firmly established, and it is appropriate that its potential should be made widely known

A New Experimental Stress Analysis Technique of Wide Application

Curvature effect on stress concentrations around circular hole in opened shallow cylindrical shell under external pressure

An experimental and finite element analysis of a uniform cylindrical shell with a large circular cut-out is presented. In this analysis three hole sizes are considered, namely μ = 2.037, 4.084, and 6.344 (where μ = {[12(1 - y2)]1/4/2} × [a/(Rt)1/2]), for loadings of axial compression, torsion and three point bending. The experimental results are the only ones available for cylindrical shells with large values of μ (except for one graph by Savin (1)†), while for three point bending there is no previously published theoretical or analytical results.Good agreement is found between the calculated and experimental stresses around the holes.
