The subgrid‐scale closure method developed by Germano et al. is modified by use of a least squares technique to minimize the difference between the closure assumption and the resolved stresses. This modification removes a source of singularity and is believed to improve the method’s applicability.

A proposed modification of the Germano subgrid‐scale closure method

We develop the dynamic renormalization group (RNG) method for hydrodynamic turbulence. This procedure, which uses dynamic scaling and invariance together with iterated perturbation methods, allows us to evaluate transport coefficients and transport equations for the large-scale (slow) modes. The RNG theory, which does not include any experimentally adjustable parameters, gives the following numerical values for important constants of turbulent flows: Kolmogorov constant for the inertial-range spectrumCK=1.617; turbulent Prandtl number for high-Reynolds-number heat transferPt=0.7179; Batchelor constantBa=1.161; and skewness factor¯S3=0.4878. A differentialK-\(\bar \varepsilon \) model is derived, which, in the high-Reynolds-number regions of the flow, gives the algebraic relationv=0.0837 K2/\(\bar \varepsilon \), decay of isotropic turbulence asK=O(t−1.3307), and the von Karman constantκ=0.372. A differential transport model, based on differential relations betweenK,\(\bar \varepsilon \), andν, is derived that is not divergent whenK→ 0 and\(\bar \varepsilon \) is finite. This latter model is particularly useful near walls.

Subgrid Scale Model for Finite Difference Simulations of Turbulent Flows in Plane Channels and Annuli

The derivation of smoothed or filtered momentum and continuity equations for large-scale, energy-containing eddies is considered. Questions regarding the energy loss of large-scale turbulence are discussed along with aspects of turbulent diffusion of a passive scalar. It is found that the large-scale fluctuations satisfy filtered or averaged momentum and continuity equations. An averaging of the nonlinear advection term yields two terms.

Energy Cascade in Large-Eddy Simulations of Turbulent Fluid Flows

The paper analyzes models for subgrid-scale turbulence. The analysis indicates that there is sufficient information in the resolved scales to determine some characteristics of the complete flow field. The kinetic energy of the small-scale motions can be decomposed into two parts: one results from the large scales and is correlated with them, and the other part is uncorrelated which leads to a two-component eddy-viscosity model. The 'production equals dissipation' argument does not apply to the small scales in the decay of turbulence because it does not account for the uncorrelated component. The exchange between the large and small scales takes place mainly between the smallest scales of the former and the largest scales of the latter; this argument is the basis of a new model shown to be superior to the Smagorinsky model (1963).
