It is shown that, particularly for terrestrial cellular telephony, the interference-suppression feature of CDMA (code division multiple access) can result in a many-fold increase in capacity over analog and even over competing digital techniques. A single-cell system, such as a hubbed satellite network, is addressed, and the basic expression for capacity is developed. The corresponding expressions for a multiple-cell system are derived. and the distribution on the number of users supportable per cell is determined. It is concluded that properly augmented and power-controlled multiple-cell CDMA promises a quantum increase in current cellular capacity. >

On the capacity of a cellular CDMA system

Third-generation (3G) and beyond 3G mobile communication systems must provide interoperability with the Internet, increase throughput for mobile devices, and optimize their operation for multimedia applications. The limited ability of traditional layered architectures to exploit the unique nature of wireless communication has fostered the introduction of cross-layer design solutions that allow optimized operation for mobile devices in the modern heterogeneous wireless environment. In this article we present the major cross-layer design solutions that handle such problems, and discuss cross-layer implementations with a focus on functional entities that support cross-layer processes and the respective signaling. In addition, we consider the associated architectural complexity and communication overhead they introduce. Furthermore, we point out the major open technical challenges in the cross-layer design research area. Finally, we conclude our article with a summary of cross-layer approaches developed thus far and provide directions for future work.

Cross-layer design proposals for wireless mobile networks: a survey and taxonomy

A combined source-channel coding approach is described for the encoding, transmission and remote reconstruction of image data. The source encoder employs two-dimensional (2-D) differential pulse code modulation (DPCM). This is a relatively efficient encoding scheme in the absence of channel errors. In the presence of channel errors, however, the performance degrades rapidly. By providing error control protection to those encoded bits which contribute most significantly to image reconstruction, it is possible to minimize this degradation without sacrificing transmission bandwidth. The result is a relatively robust design which is reasonably insensitive to channel errors and yet provides performance approaching the rate-distortion bound. Analytical results are provided for assumed 2-D autoregressive image models while simulation results are described for real-world images.

Combined source-channel coding of images

Cross-layer design approaches are critical for efficient utilization of the scarce radio resources with QoS provisioning in the third-generation wireless networks and beyond. Better system performance can be obtained from information exchanges across protocol layers, which may not be available in the traditional layering architecture. This article provides an overview of cross-layer design approaches for resource allocation in 3G CDMA networks, summarizes state-of-the-art research results, and suggests further research issues. In addition, a cross-layer design approach for real-time video over time-varying CDMA channels is proposed, where link layer resource allocation benefits from information in both the application and physical layers. Simulations results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Cross-layer design for resource allocation in 3G wireless networks and beyond

A major challenge in video encoding and transmission over wireless networks is that the channel is error-prone while the compressed video data is highly sensitive to errors. The transmission errors will cause decoding failure at the receiver side. More importantly, the transmission errors introduced in one video frame will propagate to its subsequent frames along the motion prediction path and significantly degrade video presentation quality. This type of picture distortion is called transmission distortion. In this work, we propose a control system approach to transmission distortion modeling. More specifically, we consider the wireless video transmission and decoding system as a linear system with the transmission errors as system input and the transmission distortion as output. We study the fading behavior of the impulse transmission distortion. We analyze the low-pass filtering behavior of video encoders and develop a scheme to estimate the instantaneous transmission distortion. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed transmission distortion model is accurate and robust. In addition, it has very low computational complexity. More importantly, because it is a predictive model, it allows the encoder to predict the transmission distortion even before the video is compressed and transmitted. This type of transmission distortion model has important applications in resource allocation and performance optimization in real-time wireless video communication

Transmission Distortion Analysis for Real-Time Video Encoding and Streaming Over Wireless Networks

We consider future generation wireless code-division multiple-access (CDMA) cellular networks supporting heterogeneous compressed video traffic and investigate transport schemes for maximizing the number of users that can be supported in a single cell while simultaneously maximizing the reconstructed video quality of individual users. More specifically, we demonstrate that the network resources consumed by an individual user in a spread-spectrum CDMA network can be taken as the product of the allocated source-coding rate R/sub s/ and the energy per bit normalized to the multiple-access interference noise density /spl gamma//sub b/. We propose a joint source coding and power control (JSCPC) approach for allocating these two quantities to an individual user, subject to a constraint on the total available bandwidth, to simultaneously maximize the per-cell capacity while maximizing the quality of the delivered video to individual users. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using the ITU-T H.263+ video source coder, although the approach is generally applicable to other source-coding schemes as well. The results indicate a significant improvement in delivered quality-of-service (QoS), measured in terms of the end-user average peak signal-to-noise ratio, that can be achieved at a given level of network loading. Furthermore, we demonstrate that without an appropriate JSCPC strategy the traditional soft-capacity limit associated with CDMA networks is no longer present. Indeed, a precipitous decrease in performance can be expected with increasing load. We show that this behavior can be avoided with the proposed JSCPC approach, thereby significantly extending the useful capacity of the CDMA network while exhibiting a more graceful degradation pattern under increasing load.
