Journal ArticleDOI

The spindle as a basal body distributor. A study in the meiosis of the male silkworm moth, Bombyx mori.

TL;DR: The spindle of metazoan cells functions as a dual distributor that guarantees the accurate segregation of both chromosomes and centrioles (basal bodies) and may have evolved from the separate distribution devices for chromosomes and basal bodies found in Protozoa.
Journal ArticleDOI

Giant centrioles in neuropteran meiosis.

TL;DR: Centrioles were studied in living and fixed testes of neuropteran insects by light, phase-contrast, and electron microscopy, finding that giant centrioles, measuring up to 8.0 µ in length, develop in meiotic prophase, whereas only minute centriole are found in spermatogonia.
