Comparison of the tool life of tungsten carbides coated by multi-layer TiCN and TiAlCN for end mills using the Taguchi method

A cutting tool is provided composed of a hard substrate having a PVD coating thereon having three layers. The innermost of first layer (1) is composed of a group IVB (titanium, hafnium or zirconium) metal alloy. The middle or second layer (2 and 3) is composed of a group IVB carbonitride. The outermost or third layer (4) is also composed of a group IVB metal nitride. The PVD coating is characterized by high hardness and high residual compressive stresses.

Tribological characteristics of titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride multilayer films. Part II. The effect of coating sequence on tribological properties

The tribological parameters are composed of specimens coated with titanium film as underlayer, and different ceramic materials as top layers. Titanium nitride (TiN) film or titanium carbonitride (Ti(C,N)) film of different thicknesses was deposited as the top layer using the cathodic arc ion plating technique. We address the influence of the thickness of the two different coating layers on the friction coefficient, wear rate, adhesion strength, wear mechanism, microhardness and temperature of the specimen, and the effect of sliding speed on both the friction coefficient and wear rate. Increasing sliding speed results in a significant decline in both the wear rate and friction coefficient. For specimens with the same coating layer thickness, higher temperatures were obtained with the Ti(C,N) coating, even when there was a relatively lower accompanying friction coefficient. The decrease in adhesive strength caused by increasing the top layer thickness is evidently higher than that caused by increasing the underlayer thickness. If the thickness of the underlayer is held constant, the specimen microhardness increases with increasing top layer thickness. If the thickness of the top layer is held constant, whichever material was coated as the top layer, increasing the underlayer thickness decreases the microhardness.

Comparison of the tribological characteristics of titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride coating films

A process for physical vapor deposition of a refractory coating such as titanium nitride on a nonconductive substrate such as a ceramic substrate and the coated substrate produced thereby. The nonconductive substrate is coated by cleaning the nonconductive substrate surfaces and then depositing a first layer of a refractory metal such as titanium metal on the nonconductive substrate by physical vapor deposition. A second layer of a refractory compound such as titanium nitride is then deposited on the first layer by physical vapor deposition to produce a coated nonconductive substrate having enhanced coating adhesion.
