TL;DR: Gifford and Hill as mentioned in this paper introduced the concept of the length of the period of production (LOP) as a way of measuring the time of production in a business cycle.
Abstract: The December issue of the Economic Journal contains two extremely interesting contributions, by Mr. C. H. P. Gifford and Mr. Martin Hill, to the problem of measuring the ‘length of the period of production’. As has been pointed out by both authors, this notion is not without significance for the understanding of recent discussions on business cycles. A few further remarks may be permitted.1
