An increasing number of vehicles on the roads increases the risk of accidents. In bad weather (e.g., heavy rainfall, strong winds, storms, and fog), this risk almost doubles due to bad visibility as well as road conditions. If an accident happens, especially in bad weather, it is important to inform approaching vehicles about it. Otherwise, there might be another accident, i.e., a multiple-vehicle collision (MVC). If the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is not informed in a timely fashion about the incident, fatalities might increase because they do not receive immediate first aid. Detecting humans or animals would undoubtedly provide us with a better answer for reducing human fatalities in traffic accidents. In this research, an accident alert light and sound (AALS) system is proposed for auto accident detection and alerts with all types of vehicles. No changes are required in non-equipped vehicles (nEVs) and EVs because the system is installed on the roadside. The idea behind this research is to make smart roads (SRs) instead of equipping each vehicle with a separate system. Wireless communication is needed only when an accident is detected. This study is based on different sensors that are used to build SRs to detect accidents. Pre-saved locations are used to reduce the time needed to find the accident’s location without the help of a global positioning system (GPS). Additionally, the proposed framework for the AALS also reduces the risk of MVCs.

Embedded active RFID with WSN for machine condition monitoring

In this paper we present the design and development of an industrial grade wireless base station for industrial monitoring and control using wireless sensor networks. This paper highlights the need for a base station for wireless sensor networks, the challenges in deploying in industrial environments, the requirements of the base station in addressing those challenges and the design of an industrial grade wireless base station. Although a wireless sensor node is efficient enough to act as a base station in a wireless sensor network their processing power and communication capabilities are limited since they are designed to work at very low power. A large scale wireless sensor network usually consists of thousands of motes which have low-memory, low processing power, and limited communication capacity. To collaboratively monitor environment and obtain global information, centralized data processing by Base Station is necessary. A Base Station is a powerful device which has much higher processing power, more memory and much higher communication capabilities. The Industrial Wireless Base Station (iWase) built around the powerful AT91SAM9XE512 controller has higher processing power and supports Ethernet (wired) and GSM/GPRS (wireless) communication in addition to IEEE 802.15.4 radio communication with sensor nodes. iWase is provided with an ingress protection of IP65, which facilitates operation in harsh outdoor environments. iWase also provides excellent operation in the industrial environment with an operating temperature range of −40 to +85°C.

Industrial grade wireless base station for Wireless sensor networks

Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), a wireless standard, is considered to be the most promising protocol to be used for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communications. The DSRC standard is specifically designed for automotive use, focused on vehicular safety applications. Most of the road accidents are accounted due to non-focused drivers and unpredicted roads, which could be reduced to a great extend using DSRC enabled alert systems. This paper describes the design and implementation of DSRC based On-Board and Road Side Units as well as the architecture and functional aspects of the DSRC protocol along with two vehicular safety applications developed and tested.

Safety Alert Systems Using Dedicated Short Range Communication for on Road Vehicles

Industrial automation is undergoing a tremendous change due to the proliferation of the concepts, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and tactile internet, which enables the interconnections of factory floor devices and enterprise network on a wider and fine-grained scale. Vision Sensor deployments are getting great momentum in factories, as it improves the quality and productivity of the systems being inspected. Smart Vision Sensors[1] removes the need of the additional infrastructures for running the image processing algorithms and vision applications, by directly running the vision logic on the device and control/monitor the various parameters on the field based on the image processing outputs. Industrial vision sensor (IVIS) is an industrial smart camera, which has a CMOS image sensor[2] and a powerful on-board processing system capable of supporting machine vision applications, for improving the product and process qualities and thereby improve the yield and profit. IVIS is capable of extracting application-specific information from the captured images and make decisions based on the image processing algorithms implemented on the system, to realize stand-alone intelligent and decision-making automation system. In this paper we present the design and development of IVIS, its application domains and preliminary test results.
