Introduction This questionnaire study evaluates dermatological complaints that may arise due to hygiene measures and anxiety among healthcare professionals (HCPs) during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods A total of 526 volunteers, consisting of doctors and nurses, participated. Demographic features, personal hygiene behavior, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety (HADS-A) parameters, and symptoms of various dermatological diseases (xerosis, eczema, acne, hair loss, palmar hyperhidrosis, xeromycteria, urticaria, aphthous stomatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis) were investigated. Results Although the frequency and severity of many dermatological complaints increased during the pandemic period, the most frequent increase was observed in the frequency of complaints suggesting xerosis and eczema. We found that complaints suggesting xerosis and eczema were seen on the hands 2.44 and 3.57 times, respectively, as a result of washing hands 10 times/day, and that handwashing times of 10 seconds or more significantly increased the risk of eczema (5.44 times). Another remarkable result was a fivefold increase in acne complaints among those using any mask. The severity of all complaints except hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis correlated significantly with HADS-A. Conclusions Our study showed that the frequency and severity of some dermatological complaints increased in HCPs.

Changes in dermatological complaints among healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 outbreak in Turkey

Introduction: The occurrence of various skin diseases is linked to certain geographical, racial, environmental and socioeconomic factors. There are also seasonal skin disorders that are regularly observed for many centuries. A change in temperature, humidity, ultraviolet rays, wind and atmospheric pollen allergens also influences the pattern of skin diseases.(1)
Aim:
1.        To determine the pattern of skin diseases.
2.        To determine the association of gender with the common skin diseases.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on all the patients who attended the outpatient Department of Dermatology during a span of one year. A thorough medical history with detailed cutaneous examination was carried out on every patient. Investigations and skin biopsies were performed, when required, for confirmation of diagnosis.
Results: A total of 163201 patients presented to our outpatient Department of Dermatology from 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2016. Out of this sample, 81274 were enrolled as new cases while 81927 were patients who came for follow up visits. This study comprised of 44.3% (72299) males, 44.7% (72950) females and children-11% (17952). Most patients belonged to the age group of 20-50 years.
Out of the 163201 cases, fungal infections were the most common skin diseases seen, affecting 14.65% (23901) patients, followed by Eczema 7.40% (12080), Miliaria Rubra 6.88% (11222) Scabies 5.99% (9780), Psoriasis 4.26% (6948), Hansen’s disease 3.37% (5506), Acne 2.85% (4652), Vitiligo 2.43% (3968), Bullous disorders 1.43% (2334), others 50.73% (82796).
Conclusion: Fungal infections were the most common skin diseases seen in our study. This may be attributed to the upsurge of cases recalcitrant to the available anti-fungal drugs and also due to the application of topical steroids. Epidemiological Pattern of Skin Diseases Among Patients Attending Dermatological Outpatient Department at a Tertiary Care Centre, North Chennai

Objective To determine the spectrum and frequency of skin diseases on the basis of histopathology. Methods 152 skin biopsy specimens were received during a period of one year. They were processed routinely and findings recorded. Relevant demographic data as well as clinical findings were also noted. After diagnosis, the cases were divided into seven groups, viz, eczema-dermatitis, papulosquamous disorders, infectious disorders, blistering disorders, neoplastic lesions, degenerative diseases and miscellaneous lesions. Results were analyzed using percentage frequencies, Fischer’s exact test and student’s t test as appropriate. Results The age range of patients was 5-81 years with mean being 37.59±17 years. Majority of biopsies were from male patients (55.3%). Papulosquamous disorders were the most common group with a frequency of 46.7%. Second most frequent skin disease groups were eczema -dermatitis and blistering disorders, each accounting for 12.5 % of all biopsies. Neoplastic lesions constituted 10.5% of the lesions, with benign and malignant lesions presenting at the average ages of 47 and 43 years respectively. Conclusion The average age at presentation was close to that reported by other researchers from this region. The greater number of male patients is at variance from most other reported studies. The difference was statistically highly significant (p=0.0031). The frequency of different diagnostic groups was unique in some respects and conformed to other studies in others. The most striking was the statistically significant difference in age of presentation of patients with malignant neoplasms. This highlights the need to raise awareness in public about the possible precautionary measures that need to be taken, in this region with high levels of exposure to sunlight.

Histopathological analysis of skin biopsies in a tertiary care setting

Objective: The aim of study was to assess the comorbidity of psychiatric illnesses in the patients suffering from chronic skin Diseases. Material and Methods: One hundred consecutive patients attending OPD of Dept. of Dermatology, ANMCH, Gaya, Bihar were studied. Patients were examined through Psychiatric interview & screened through Hospital anxiety and depression scale after taking informed consent. Discussion & Results: Out of these 40 patients 70% (28/40) had anxiety disorder and 30% (12/40) had depressive disorder or dysthymia. Patients of anxiety disorders 35.7% (10/28) had mixed anxiety disorder, 25.7% had Generalized anxiety disorder, 21.4% (6/28) had panic disorder, 17.85(5/28) had somatization disorder. Patients of depressive disorders 66.66% had major depressive disorder and 33.33% had dysthymia. Conclusion: There is a high rate of psychiatric problems in patients with chronic Skin Diseases.

Psychiatric Co-morbidity in Chronic Skin Diseases

Dermatitis also known as eczema, is inflammation of the skin, typically characterized by itchiness, redness and a rash. Dermatitis was estimated to affect 245 million people globally in 2015 or 3.34% of the world population. In Nepal, studies from different parts of the country have reported the prevalence of dermatitis between 15.9 to 39.2%. Severe dermatitis with repeated scratching and rubbing of the face predisposes the patient to various ocular complications. A hospital-based, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted to assess the overall frequency and type of ophthalmological complications among patients with dermatitis at a tertiary care hospital in Kathmandu. A total of 91 patients were enrolled for this study. The minimum age was 5 years and maximum was 78 years, with the mean of 30.48 with a standard deviation of ± 20.28. The upper and lower limits for estimated mean age were 34.63 years to 26.33 years at 95% confidence interval. Seventy-one (78.0%) of all patients had ocular manifestations, many of them had more than one manifestation. Females outnumbered the males (41.8%; 36.3%) with respect to the occurrence of ocular manifestations in dermatitis. The commonest ocular manifestations were blepharitis in 35 (38.5%) patients, followed by eyelid eczema in 13 (14.3%) patients, allergic conjunctivitis in 5 (5.5%) and patients with other manifestations. Based on professional classification, over one fourth of the participants were students accounting for 44.0%, followed by homemakers accounting for 23.1% and shopkeepers accounting for 11.1%, respectively. A statistically significant association was observed with the ocular manifestation in relation to gender (p value=0.03) and occupation (p value=0.03). However, no association was observed between ocular manifestation with duration of dermatitis (p value=0.65), type of dermatitis (p value=0.94), personal and family history of allergy/atopy (pvalues=0.26; 0.58, respectively).

Ocular manifestations and its associated factors in patients with dermatitis at a tertiary care hospital in Kathmandu

Introduction : The pattern of skin disease differs in different countries, and within various region of a country depending on socio-economic, racial and environmental factors. Many researchers have reported various patterns of skin disease in different countries. This type of study has not been done in this part of country. So, we decided to study, assess and compare the different pattern of dermatological disease in patients visiting our centre. Methods : This was retrospective study done from the hospital record of Lumbini Medical College Teaching Hospital (LMCTH). The study was carried out from September 2014 to December 2014 while the data were accessed from the records of respondents from September 2013 to August 2014. The diagnosis was categorized into 10 groups. The diagnosis which did not fit any category was kept in “Others”. The 10 categories include acne, bacterial infection, dermatophytes, eczema, leprosy, pigmentory diseases, psoriasis, scabies, urticaria and viral infection. Data was collected based on gender and categorized according to the diagnosis. Microsoft Excel was used for data entry while all the analysis both descriptive and inferential statistics was done using SPSS version 21. Results : There were a total of 7967 patients visiting Dermatology OPD. Out of the total patient, there were 52.10% female and 47.89% male and this difference was statistically significant. In both gender eczema was the most common skin disease. Eczema was significantly more common in male whereas acne was significantly common in female. Most of the patients were from age group of 15-30 yrs with eczema being commonest in this age group. Conclusion : Eczema and dermatophytes are the most common dermatological diseases.
