TL;DR: In The Archaeology of Knowledge, Michel Foucault defines the various sciences as so many kinds of discourse resulting from what he calls "discursive formation" as mentioned in this paper, and argues that every branch of scientific knowledge is the product of an historically definable process, beginning with the moment at which a single system for the formation of statements is put into operation and culminating in formalization.
