A self-terminating coaxial connector is provided which is adapted to versatile use in local area network, CATV and other coaxial cable systems. The connector has the external appearance of a conventional coaxial connector and has the structure for providing the self-terminating operation contained within the connector housing. A slidable assembly is disposed within the connector body and includes an electrical contact element having contact ends confronting respective ends of the connector. A second conductive element is attached to and electrically connected to the first contact element and includes one or more outwardly extending finger portions which confront one or more respective chip resistors which are supported in respective openings of the body. A spring is provided within the body and is operative to urge the slidable assembly to an outward position in the absence of a plug attached to the outlet end. In this outward position the finger portions are in electrical connection with the chip resistor to provide termination of the connector by providing a matched impedance between the contact element and the grounded connector body. With a plug installed onto the outlet of the body, the slidable assembly is urged inwardly of the body to cause the finger portions to move out of electrical engagement with the resistor, thereby breaking the connection to the terminating resistor when the connector is attached to an associated coaxial plug for use.

A coaxial connector (2) is provided having a central insulator (6) which surrounds the signal contact, an impedance element (18) such as a resistor disposed around the outside of the central insulator (6) which is in contact with the outer conductive housing (4) on one end and a spring (10) on the other end. The spring (10) extends around and along the outside of the central insulator (6) and is in contact with a switch contact (14) which is also disposed around the central insulator. The switch contact (18) is biased towards, and is normally in contact with the center conductor (12). The switch is actuated by an actuator (16) which is placed around the center conductor (12) and is movable in cooperation with the mating connector (90) to open or separate the switch contact (14) from the center conductor (12).

The present invention relates to variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) devices and methods for maximizing engine generator efficiency. In one embodiment, a VSCF device may include at least two paths for conducting power to the load. One path, a line inductor path, may advantageously incur minimal power loss when the engine generator is supplying rated power to a load. A second path, a VSCF path, may be used to ensure that the frequency of the power is maintained at a substantially constant frequency under various load conditions. Another embodiment of the invention describes a process for determining optimal engine generator speed for a particular load. Because engine speed can be varied using any VSCF device, this process determines a speed that minimizes fuel consumption, emissions, and noise pollution for a given load.

Ends of electrical conductors 5 of an electrical cable are joined to corresponding self terminating, shielded connectors 4, each comprising, a conductive shell 20 connected to at least one corresponding sheath 8, a dielectric support 29 in the shell 20, a conductive switch contact 23 connected to a corresponding signal transmitting conductor 5 and carried by the dielectric support 29 for disconnect connection to an electrical contact inserted into the shielded connector 4, and an electrical circuit element 24 in contact with the shell 20 constructed for disconnect coupling with the switch contact 23 upon withdrawal of the electrical contact from the shielded connector 4, whereby the switch contact 23 is terminated electrically to the shell 20 through the circuit element 24.
