A printed circuit cavity-backed crossed-slotted conductive element having two legs of each slot coupled by stripline feeders to a radio communications device. The feeders supply the radio frequency signal with a 180 degree phase shift in order to cancel cross-coupling from one leg to another around the intersection. The conductive element and the stripline feeders are mounted on separate substrates which are attached together with other elements to provide shielding and mechanical protection. The crossed-slot design reduces space and structure required for a mobile application while achieving good performance. When mounted in an array, the crossed slot antennas may be directionally tuned to a specific satellite/frequency/direction via pin diode phase shifters.

A system and method for diversity implementation are provided, where diversity gains are obtained by using a hybrid of the switching technique and the combining technique in conjunction with the use of a modal antenna. The antenna system includes multiple antennas including at least one modal antenna that has multiple modes, and a processor for selecting one or more modes from the multiple modes associated with each of the at least one modal antenna, combining modes to form one or more combinations of modes, the modes in each of the one or more combinations including one of the one or more selected modes associated with each of the at least one modal antenna, and selecting one of the one or more combinations that optimizes correlation and/or a quality metric for diversity.

Method and system for switched combined diversity with a modal antenna

An antenna for utilization in a fuse of an artillery shell or the like. The antenna includes a dielectric disk having upper and lower surfaces, a radiator disposed on the upper surface of the dielectric disk, a ground plane disposed on the lower surface of said dielectric disk, and a plurality of spaced apart apertures radially disposed through the dielectric disk for coupling the radiator to the ground plane.

Artillery fuse circumferential slot antenna for positioning and telemetry

An antenna assembly including a ground plane and a generally planar cross-slot antenna, spaced from the ground plane and arranged generally parallel thereto, the generally planar cross-slot antenna including a generally rigid dielectric substrate having formed on a first side thereof, a metal layer which defines mutually spaced rectangular slots at which the metal layer is not present and having formed on a second side thereof, there are defined feed lines extending radially outwardly from a central junction thereof, each to cross a corresponding one of the rectangular slots.

Conical beam cross-slot antenna

A motor vehicle antenna system is disclosed for receiving electromagnetically radiated signals in the FM radio broadcast frequency range. The antenna system includes a magnetic current receiving, conformal, substantially rectangular truncated slot antenna. The slot antenna is defined in part by a substantially horizontal portion of a conductive periphery of a window opening of the motor vehicle. The slot antenna is further defined in part by a conductive trace integral with a glazing panel mounted in the window opening. The conductive trace extends horizontally a distance equal to one-half a wavelength in the FM broadcast frequency band. The ends of the trace are effectively connected to the conductive periphery of the window opening. An electrical lead is provided for carrying signals from the slot antenna to a radio receiver, having a first conductor connected to the conductive window periphery and a second conductor coupled to the slot antenna, such as by a network feed structure integral with the windshield, optionally forming an electrical junction with the trace. The side points of the trace are effectively connected to the conductive periphery, e.g., by direct physical connection using an electrical lead, or by providing vertically-extending end traces parallel and proximate to opposite vertical portions of the electrically conductive periphery of the window opening.

Motor vehicle antenna systems

A multimode low-profile avionics antenna is disclosed for use in Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) systems. The low profile antenna generates a steerable cardioid radiation pattern having a minimum bandwidth of 30% and an unusual degree of independence from mutual coupling and coupling to ground-plane currents. The antenna includes two resonant cavity-backed slot antennas. The upper cavity, which backs a directional crossed-slot antenna, is the larger of the two cavities. The shallow lower cavity is actually a short-circuited radial transmission line employing a stepped inner radius and band-switching to extend the operating bandwidth to the required 30%. The crossed-slot antenna elements are configured orthogonally and the slot ends are folded over the side of the cylindrical cavity to minimize the resonant cavity diameter for the requisite slot length. The slot width is stepped open at the crossover point to enhance antenna bandwidth and to provide for greater spacing between the symmetrically-located feedpoints. The shallow circumferential slot antenna is equipped with two band-switched inductances for wider bandwidth. The two stacked cavities have a combined height of less than 0.1λ at the operating frequency and are suitable for use as a flush-mounted aircraft or helicopter ADF antenna.
