Recent developments in historical sociology emphasize the centrality of temporality to analysis and explanation. Narrative uses temporal order to organize information about events and to foster their understanding but is insufficiently systematic to substitute for sociological explanation. This article illustrates a new interpretative heuristic for the computer- assisted analysis of qualitative narrative sequences, "event-structure analysis,"that infuses narrative with greater rigor and explicitness. Through the analysis of a lynching that took place in Mississippi in 1930, this article shows how event-structure analysis can be used to build replicable and generalizable causal interpretations of events.

The New `Peculiar Institution':: On the Prison as Surrogate Ghetto

A lifecourse perspective is key for understanding and interpreting racial and ethnic patterns in neuropsychological test performance. In this article, we discuss contextual factors that shape the environmental conditions encountered by racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, in particular African-Americans. These conditions include geographic segregation at the level of regions, metropolitan areas, and neighborhoods; intra- and inter-national migration patterns; socioeconomic position, including financial resources, and occupational and educational opportunities; discrimination; and group resources. Each of these exposures sets in course a cascade of individual mediators that ultimately manifest in neuropsychological outcomes. The physiological and behavioral consequences of these pathways likely accumulate across the lifecourse. We focus on cognitive aging, although the processes discussed here begin in infancy and likely influence cognitive outcomes throughout life from childhood into old age. A lifecourse framework can help inform clinical encounters, neuropsychological research, and surveillance regarding the population prevalence of cognitive impairments.

Lifecourse Social Conditions and Racial and Ethnic Patterns of Cognitive Aging

from 1983 to1995. ourts with the power to exercise constitutional review-as constitutional courts or in a decentralized system of judicial reviewconstitute central institutions of governance in most Western-style democracies. I present a simple game-theoretic model that provides a unified account of the multi-faceted interactions between such courts and the legislatures they are, at least in part, intended to control. The model addresses legislative anticipation of judicial review, legislative reactions to judicial rulings, and investigates the implications for judicial behavior. It demonstrates that the political environment in which a court must act is crucially important to the manner in which it will use its powers. As a result, the analysis provides important insights into the extent and the limits of judicial influence, thereby addressing questions that have been a recurring topic of debate among judicial scholars in the last decade (e.g., Holland 1991; Stone 1992; Tate and Vallinder 1995). In addition, the model lends insight into the current debate concerning the extent of strategic behavior by justices, demonstrating under which circumstances justices are likely to be constrained by strategic considerations and when this will not be the case (e.g., Carrubba 2000; Ferejohn and Weingast 1992; Rogers 2001; Segal 1997). The article is organized as follows. The next section introduces the substantive feature of legislative-judicial relations that is central to the analysis. The third section describes the model. In the fourth section, I present the equilibria of the game and interpret the results. The fifth section provides an empirical test of some of the model's conclusions using data on the decisions of the German Constitutional Court. The final section concludes.

Legislative-Judicial Relations: A Game-Theoretic Approach to Constitutional Review

This article examines the process of racialization as an essential aspect of how everyday geographies are made, understood, and challenged. It begins from the premise that a primary root of modern American race relations can be found in the southern past, especially in how that past was imagined, articulated, and performed during a crucial period: the post-Reconstruction era known as “Jim Crow.” More than just a reaction to a turbulent world where Civil War defeat destabilized categories of power and authority, white cultural memory there became an active ingredient in defining life in the New South. The culture of segregation that mobilized such memories, and the forgetting that inevitably accompanied them, relied on performance, ritualized choreographies of race and place, and gender and class, in which participants knew their roles and acted them out for each other and for visitors.
