Journal ArticleDOI

Freezing and Lyophilizing Alters the Structure of Bentonite Gels

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that during quick-freezing with liquid nitrogen all but two molecular layers of water moved from between the crystals of saturated bentonite gels, and the water molecules appeared to have migrated to ice crystals forming near the clay crystals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lysis of erythrocytes by silicate minerals

TL;DR: In vitro studies of the destruction (lysis) of bovine red blood cells (erythrocytes) by some silicate minerals showed the reaction to be complete in less than 1 hr and very destructive to the cell membrane.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of Poly-2-vinylpyridine-N-oxide and Sucrose on Silicate-Induced Hemolysis of Erythrocytes

TL;DR: The results indicate that both hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions between silicate surfaces and the erythrocyte membrane are important in the hemolytic process.
