A structure for use in an antenna or as a broadband electromagnetic field simulator, having an open horn TEM waveguide coupled to launch energy in a strip line formed between a forwardly extending plate section and a ground plane. When used as a simulator the test volume is located outside the horn between the forwardly extending plate section and the ground plane. The plate section which functions as a radiating element initially extends parallel to the ground plane and then curves downwardly to terminate adjacent it. In alternative embodiments the plate section extends upwardly, initially with an exponential configuration. In a simulator embodiment it may then terminate at a vertical, grounded wall faced with anechoic material. The horn contains a flat conductor plate positioned parallel to and spaced from the top edge defining an asymmetrical transmission line within the horn. This plate conductor can be coupled to the forwardly extending plate section directly, by means of an RLC coupling network or by means of an array of laterally spaced conductors.

Broadband antennas and electromagnetic field simulators

A radar antenna element comprises a lower band waveguide and an array of parallel, dual-polarized, higher band waveguides and dipoles mounted within or directly adjacent an aperture of the lower band waveguide. The lower band waveguide and each higher band waveguide have one cross-sectional dimension less than 0.5 wavelength. A choke section, tuned dielectric or absorber isolates signals of the higher band waveguides from signals of the lower band waveguide. An array of such radar antenna elements locates a radar target with lower band signals and tracks that target with higher band signals, for instance.

Dual band antenna element

A dual frequency feed for use with an antenna permits reception of signals in both a low frequency band and a high frequency band and is comprised of a single feed through which both signals are propagated, a high frequency probe which extends concentrically within the throat of the feed for receiving the high frequency signal, a wave guide connected to the throat of the feed including a pair of turnstile junctions with four wave guides interconnecting the turnstile junctions, and a single output port with a polarization rotation device for receiving the low frequency signal. The four interconnecting wave guides may be either co-axial cables or generally rectangular wave guides.

Dual frequency feed

A horn antenna is provided which is capable of operating at a plurality of separate frequencies while providing substantially equalized E and H-plane patterns for each of the separate frequencies. The antenna includes a coupling portion to permit coupling to a communication device. An inner portion is coupled to the coupling portion, and includes a first choke having a depth which extends substantially parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the antenna and a width which extends in a radial direction of the antenna. The depth and the width of the first choke are set so that the first choke will operate at the first frequency. An outer portion is coupled to the inner portion, wherein the outer portion has a maximum diameter in the radial direction which is greater than the maximum diameter in the radial direction of the inner portion. The outer portion includes a second choke which also has a depth to extend substantially parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the antenna, and a width which extends in the radial direction. The depth and the width of the second choke are greater than the depth and the width of the first choke, and are set so that the second choke will operate at the second frequency. By virtue of the fact that the depths of the chokes extend in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the horn, the maximum electrical aperture of the antenna can be very close in size to the maximum physical diameter.

Dual depth aperture chokes for dual frequency horn equalizing E and H-plane patterns

An array of five, ridge waveguide horns provides monopulse operation over awo octave range. A unique coax-to-ridge waveguide input coupler and an extended ridge matching section at the radiating apertures provide the extended frequency range. The horn assembly is lightweight, compact and suitable for array applications. A five horn monopulse primary feed array is exemplified.

Small wideband passive/active antenna

A dual frequency band horn-type antenna feed is described which has primary application to optimally illuminate a parabolic cylindrical reflector operating simultaneously at high power in both of the two bands. The principle of the invention is applicable to any two frequency bands regardless of their frequency separation including coincidence as a limiting case. The basic requirement of such a feed is that it must be as directive as possible within constraint of the feed aperture size in the plane of the cylinder axis because the cylindrical reflector does not collimate the beam in this plane and it must be relatively nondirective in the plane of the parabola for efficient illumination of the reflector. This requirement requires the phase front in the directive plane to be controlled within a small fraction of a wavelength at both frequencies.
