Secure dynamic IP addressing is a prime requirement for unicast communication between authorized hosts in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Recently, several approaches have been proposed for dynamic addressing scheme. However, most of the approaches rely on broadcasting for address solicitation and/or duplicate address detection. As a result, several types of security threats in dynamic IP configuration can be observed. In this paper, we present an ID based dynamic IP configuration scheme that can securely allocate IP addresses to the authorized hosts for a mobile ad hoc network without broadcasting over the entire network. Each host in the MANET can generate an unique IP address from its own IP address for a new host. The proposed scheme provides authentication for address configuration without the help of a trusted third party while taking care of the security-threats associated with dynamic IP configuration. Performance analysis shows that even with added security mechanisms our proposed addressing scheme has fairly good addressing latency and control overhead compared to the similar existing schemes. Moreover, the proposed scheme is able to solve the problem of network partitions and mergers along with the arrival and departure of a host efficiently and securely.

A secure dynamic IP configuration scheme for mobile ad hoc networks

In this paper, we propose a low-overhead identity-based distributed dynamic address configuration scheme for secure allocation of IP addresses to authorized nodes of a managed mobile ad hoc network. A new node will receive an IP address from an existing neighbor node. Thereafter, each node in a network is able to generate a set of unique IP addresses from its own IP address, which it can further assign to more new nodes. Due to lack of infrastructure, apart from security issues, such type of networks poses several design challenges such as high packet error rate, network partitioning, and network merging. Our proposed protocol takes care of these issues incurring less overhead as it does not require any message flooding mechanism over the entire MANET. Performance analysis and simulation results show that even with added security mechanisms, our proposed protocol outperforms similar existing protocols.

A Secure Addressing Scheme for Large-Scale Managed MANETs

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is formed by collaboration of nodes characterized by having the same capabilities whereas neither central infrastructure nor central coordination is required. Notwithstanding the communication between nodes in MANET requires each node to have a unique identity (IP-address), many critical networks require some level of security in which all security principles require the node to have a security key. A tree-based dynamic address autoconfiguration protocol (TDAAP) is found to be one of the best protocols for address assignment based on network throughput and delay. MANET security ideally takes place during the design phase of the routing module. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme that merges the process of assigning IP addresses and security keys to the nodes in MANET using one protocol such that as soon as a node enters the network, it will be assigned an IP address and security key. To the best of our knowledge, no single protocol provides both IP addresses and security keys for MANET nodes. The results of the proposed method, which is based on T-DAAP, show significant reductions in the control packets and packet delay. Additionally, it provides not only efficient security to the nodes from the first moment they join the network, but also secure delivery of IP addresses and security keys to the network nodes.

Merging dynamic address autoconfiguration and security key protocols in mobile ad hoc networks

In mobile adhoc networks (MANETs) a tree-based dynamic address auto-configuration protocol (T-DAAP) is one of the best protocols designed for address assignment as far as the network throughput and packet delays are concerned. Moreover, MANET security is an important factor for many applications given that any node can listen to the channel and overhear the packets being transmitted. In this paper, we merge the address assignment with the security key delivery into one protocol, such that a node in the MANET is configured with IP address and security key simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, no single protocol provides concurrent assignment of IP addresses and security keys for MANET nodes. The proposed method, which is based on T-DAAP, shows significant enhancements in the required control packets needed for assigning network nodes IP addresses and security keys, MAC layer packets, total end-to-end delay, and channel throughput over those obtained when using separate protocols. Additionally, it provides not only efficient security keys to the nodes from the first moment they join the network, but also secure delivery of the address and security key to all participating nodes. It is noteworthy to mention that providing a complete security model for MANET to detect and countermeasure network security threats and attacks is beyond the scope of our proposed protocol.

Dynamic Distribution of Security Keys and IP Addresses Coalition Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile ad hoc networks allow to create very dynamic communication systems, which are independent from any fixed infrastructure. One of the most important issues regarding the management of an ad hoc network is the configuration of the system according to the way users move. Since a centralized control structure does not exist, we need to determine how the IP addresses must be assigned to the nodes in the network. In this paper we add a security mechanism to VASM protocol based on zero knowledge approach. A hash function has very low running time. So this so this scheme is very light-weight. The VASM protocol uses coordinate value of point in main address sheet for generating addresses. The performances of this solution are evaluated through the Behavioral simulation, which allowed us to check the correctness of the protocol and to estimate the control traffic generated under different operating conditions.

Lightweight Secure IP Address Auto-Configuration Based on VASM

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are networks with self-organizing capabilities and without a fixed infrastructure. Wireless nodes communicate among themselves using multi-hop radio relaying, without requiring the packets to pass through a central access point or a base station. Routing is a function of speed and stability with which the nodes are able to acquire addresses. Efficient routing forms the basis of a fast and reliable communication network. In a highly mobile and infrastructure-less scenario, pre-configuration of addresses is not possible. Therefore node addresses need to be configured dynamically with minimum delay and packet loss. Mobile ad hoc networking offers convenient infrastructure-less communication over the shared wireless channels. The major research efforts in the area of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) focus on developing efficient routing protocols assuming that IP addresses of mobile hosts have been already configured before joining the network. Providing security for IP address auto-configuration in MANET is still an open problem. Existing solutions for IP address auto-configuration in MANET do not address security issues. However, it may disserve network security if there is not a reliable authentication mechanism, e.g. an attacker may spoof other nodes and hijack their traffic. Unlike their wired counterpart, infrastructure-less ad hoc networks do not have a clear line of defense, and every node must be prepared for encountering with an adversary. Therefore, a centralized or hierarchical network security solution does not work well. This paper describes the state of research in secure address auto-configuration problem and analyzes the current existing solutions.

A Survey of Secure Address Auto-Configuration in MANET

The main task of an address auto-configuration protocol is to manage the resource address space. It must be able to select, allocate, and assign a unique network address to an un-configured node. We present the VASM protocol [1], which allows nodes in an ad hoc network to configure their own IP address automatically. Due to the mobility of nodes, different networks can overlap, and nodes with the same address can accidentally get in contact. This paper proposes an innovative management of such merging of networks. The scheme uses virtual address space for addressing new nodes joining a network. The aim is to map one point from virtual address sheet to exactly one new node. The reason for using the term "virtual" is that the whole corresponding address space is a 2D flat sheet and each point of this sheet is virtually mapped to a node in MANET. The protocol uses coordinate values for generating addresses. This paper offers the high speed prediction of address space conflicts existence and it proposes a progressive method to avoid generating a huge amount of traffic on the wireless channels. Simulation experiments were performed using the behavioral analyzing to evaluate the performance of the protocol in terms of overhead and latency.
