For use with a wireless computer network having a plurality of access points, a mobile station adapted for communicating with the network via a current access point and having a scanning circuit for locating a new access point, the scanning circuit requiring a scanning period for time to locate the new access point, a method of operation of the mobile station and a wireless computer network infrastructure. The mobile station comprises: (1) a detection circuit that generates a ready-to scan signal indicating that the mobile station is about to activate the scanning circuit and (2) a suspension circuit, coupled to the detection circuit, that receives the ready-to-scan signal and generates, in response thereto, a data suspend signal for transmission to the current access point, the data suspend signal causing the current access point to suspend transmission of data to the mobile station, thereby preventing loss of the data during the scanning period.

System and method for providing seamless handover in a wireless computer network

A geographic region has a network of beacons. Each beacon transmits a short-range facilitation signal for receipt on a user's mobile communication device. The facilitation signal initiates associating the facilitation signal with a service and conditionally alerts the user to the service via the device dependent on a user profile. The user-profile and the association between facilitation signal and service are user-programmable.

The invention relates to an integrated data transfer system, the extensive basis of which is constituted by a general cellular radio system, preferably the GSM system, and in which a radio local area network, preferably the HIPERLAN network, is used for communication between data terminals (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f) in small areas with dense communications. In addition, the Internet network (6) is used for fast data transfer. The connection between networks is controlled and handled by a gateway computer (1) located in each radio local area network. In view of the cellular radio system, the gateway computer operates like a base station controller (BSC). The radio local area network consists of the coverage areas or cells (4b, 4c) of the data terminals, and it can be formed, changed and dissolved freely. The computer terminals (3c) preferably have an Internet address enabling mobility, whereby the gateway computer (1) handles the routing to the nodes of the network and the mobile Internet nodes visiting it. In a home or small office environment (HE) there can be formed a small-scale radio local area network, the gateway (10) of which is by means of an existing connection and the corresponding general data transfer network (8) connected to a certain, larger local area network, preferably located in an office environment.

Integrated Radio Communication System

A system for communicating information to and from untethered subscriber devices and tethered devices by the use of a power transmission line communication system interfacing to a conventional electric power distribution network. Untethered subscriber devices and tethered devices will be able to send and receive impulse or modulated signals. The coupling system to and from a power transmission line is a tethered device housed entirely in an enclosure able to replace a sunlight detector affixed to a street pole, or to plug into an outlet, or to attach around a transmission line, or screw into a light socket. A battery supplies energy to the tethered device screwed into a light socket when no electricity flows to the socket. A tethered device attached around a transmission line is powered by magnetic induction and interfaces through a power transmission communication system. The tethered device interfaces directly to the electrical lines by means of a power transmission communication system. The tethered device is able to connect untethered subscriber device to a plurality of untethered devices and tethered devices to establish a personal, local, or wide area network. The tethered device is capable of locating other tethered devices and untethered subscriber devices, and using this positioning to adjust the signal power, and to handoff untethered subscriber devices.

System for coupling wireless signals to and from a power transmission line communication system

A method and system for detecting a wireless network includes receiving at a mobile device a signal having data indicative of a location of the mobile device. A determination is made whether the mobile device is within the coverage area of a specified network based on the data. The mobile device scans for the specified network in response to at least determining that it is within the coverage area of the specified network.

Method and system for detecting a preferred wireless network for a mobile device

A wireless local area network system includes a plurality of base stations (16) connected in a wired LAN (12). A mobile wireless station (20) can roam through communication cells (24) defined by the base stations (16). The base stations (16) transmit beacon messages (70) at regular intervals. The mobile station (20) determines the communications quality of the beacon message (70) for the cell in which the mobile station (20) is currently located and if this quality becomes unacceptable, switches to a search mode wherein beacon messages (70) from any base station (16) are received and their communications quality is determined. The mobile station (20) switches to communicate with a base station (16) providing a beacon message (70) with an acceptable communications quality.
