Summary of Current Radiometric Calibration Coefficients for Landsat MSS, TM, ETM+, and EO-1 ALI Sensors

Effective May 5, 2003, Landsat-5 (L5) Thematic Mapper (TM) data processed and distributed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation System (EROS) Data Center (EDC) will be radiometrically calibrated using a new procedure and revised calibration parameters. This change will improve absolute calibration accuracy, consistency over time, and consistency with Landsat-7 (L7) Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data. Users will need to use new parameters to convert the calibrated data products to radiance. The new procedure for the reflective bands (1-5,7) is based on a lifetime radiometric calibration curve for the instrument derived from the instrument's internal calibrator, cross-calibration with the ETM+, and vicarious measurements. The thermal band will continue to be calibrated using the internal calibrator. Further updates to improve the relative detector-to-detector calibration and thermal band calibration are being investigated, as is the calibration of the Landsat-4 (L4) TM.

Revised Landsat-5 TM radiometric calibration procedures and postcalibration dynamic ranges

The emergence of Web 2.0 has drastically altered the way users perceive the Internet, by improving information sharing, collaboration and interoperability. Micro-blogging is one of the most popular Web 2.0 applications and related services, like Twitter, have evolved into a practical means for sharing opinions on almost all aspects of everyday life. Consequently, micro-blogging web sites have since become rich data sources for opinion mining and sentiment analysis. Towards this direction, text-based sentiment classifiers often prove inefficient, since tweets typically do not consist of representative and syntactically consistent words, due to the imposed character limit. This paper proposes the deployment of original ontology-based techniques towards a more efficient sentiment analysis of Twitter posts. The novelty of the proposed approach is that posts are not simply characterized by a sentiment score, as is the case with machine learning-based classifiers, but instead receive a sentiment grade for each distinct notion in the post. Overall, our proposed architecture results in a more detailed analysis of post opinions regarding a specific topic.

Radiometric cross-calibration of the Landsat-7 ETM+ and Landsat-5 TM sensors based on tandem data sets

The Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor provides the longest running continuous dataset of moderate spatial resolution remote sensing imagery, dating back to its launch in March 1984. Historically, the radiometric calibration procedure for this imagery used the instrument's response to the Internal Calibrator (IC) on a scene-by-scene basis to determine the gain and offset of each detector. Due to observed degradations in the IC, a new procedure was implemented for U.S.-processed data in May 2003. This new calibration procedure is based on a lifetime radiometric calibration model for the instrument's reflective bands (1-5 and 7) and is derived, in part, from the IC response without the related degradation effects and is tied to the cross calibration with the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus. Reflective-band absolute radiometric accuracy of the instrument tends to be on the order of 7% to 10%, based on a variety of calibration methods.

Ontologies, often defined as an explicit specification of conceptualization, are necessary for knowledge representation and knowledge exchange. Usually this means that ontology describes concepts and relations that exist in a domain. To enable knowledge exchange, it is necessary to describe these concepts and relations in a better way than just ordering them in taxonomy. However, ontology design usually starts and stops with designing taxonomies. We present a method that is based on formal concept analysis, which is a theory of data analysis which identifies conceptual structures among data sets. This method allows for discovering necessity for new concepts and relations in an ontology, which leads to an ontology that has these entities described in a way suitable for knowledge exchange.

The responsivities of the Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) reflective bands are characterized over the lifetime of the instrument using its internal calibration system. This system illuminates only the focal planes and aft optics of the TM so that it does not capture changes in the telescope. The observed changes are quantified and categorized as to whether they are likely to be true instrument responsivity changes or changes in the internal calibrator system itself. Changes observed that are likely to be true instrument changes are: (1) 7 percent, 5 percent, 8 percent and 7 percent exponential-like decreases in responsivity with decay half lives of 250, 180, 60 and 110 days in bands 1 to 4, respectively, during the initial on-orbit period and (2) an oscillation in response of about 5 percent peak-to-peak in bands 5 and 7. The first effect is believed to originate in the TM spectral bandpass filters and the second effect is believed to be due to an icing build up in the cold focal plane window. Two rapid apparent responsivity changes, one a decrease and one an increase, which are peculiar to particular internal calibrator lamps are believed to be due to changes in the lamp assemblies themselves as is a gradual increase in all detector's responsivities with time. An annual oscillation of up to 2 percent peak-to-peak in all bands is likely the product of both a temperature sensitivity of the IC and the TM primary focal plane.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. The purpose of this study is to propose and study algorithms for off-line trend monitoring and change-point detection for calibration coefficient data streams. This type of algorithm is suitable for monitoring different sensors e.g. AVHRR, ETM+ and MODIS. Based on these algorithms we can produce flags for he instruments indicating normal and abnormal behavior. These algorithms can also help to discover trends and features in the calibration data. Some of these algorithms will be used by the Landsat-7 ETM+ Image Assessment System and the EOS AM1 MODIS calibration system for modeling the gain behavior of the instruments over time. Mathematically we used quadratic splines and statistical concepts for building incremental models.

We describe the key components of our game strategy for robot soccer [3] in detail. The game can be represented as a trajectory in so-called the virtual grid. The virtual grid generally allows us to reduce data volume for easy description of player motion and subsequently for controlling the game or for learning game strategies. The natural coordinate system is provided be accurate optical sensing of the subject position using lens optical transformations and the CCD camera. This natural coordinate system can be easily mapped to a virtual grid.
