TL;DR: For any adequate social theory, the question is defined by recognition of two facts: first, that there are clear social and historical relations between particular literary forms and the societies and periods in which they were originated or practiced; and second, there are undoubted continuities of literary forms through and beyond the societies to which they have such relations as discussed by the authors.

The Currency of Feminist Theory
