A number of improvements relating to methods and apparatuses for kidney dialysis are disclosed. These include checking of dialysate bypass status using flow measurement; using a flow sensor to confirm the absence of ultrafiltration during bypass; automatic testing of ultrafiltration function by removal of a discrete volume from a portion of the dialysate flow path coupled with a pressure test of that part of the flow path; using a touch screen user interface; bar graph profile programming of ultrafiltration, sodium, and bicarbonate parameters; using a RAM card to upload treatment instructions to, and to download treatment data from, the machine; automatic setting of proportioning mode (acetate or bicarbonate) based on connections of concentrate lines; predicting dialysate conductivity values based on brand and formulation of concentrates; minimizing no-flow dead time between dialysate pulses; initiating operation in a timed mode from a machine power-off condition; preserving machine mode during machine power-fail condition; calibration scheduling and reminding; automatic level adjusting; and blood leak flow rate detecting.

Method and apparatus for kidney dialysis

An apparatus and a system to teach a user a subject based on his questions. The system allows the user to control his learning process, and helps to fill in gaps of misunderstanding in the subject. In one embodiment, the system, including a database, presents study materials on the subject to the user. After working on the presented materials, the user enters his question into the system, which generates an answer to the question, and presents it to him. Then the system compares the question with one or more questions previously entered by the user to determine his understanding level in the subject. Based on the determination, the system may present to the user appropriate study materials. The user typically asks more than one question, and the process of answering his question by the system repeats.

Learning method and system based on questioning

A computer based intelligent method and system for tutoring a student in an interactive application. The method and system include a computer system for selecting a mode for an adjustable teaching parameter, generating a student model, and monitoring a student interactive task based upon the teaching parameter and the student model. The method and system also include a computer system for generating an updated student model based upon a student response to the student interactive task generated, and monitoring a student interactive task based upon the teaching parameter and the updated student model.

Intelligent tutoring method and system

A virtual school user interface running on networked personal computers for providing administrative and instructional functions to users in a scholastic environment. A user selects among grouped system functions by accessing one of a plurality of rooms within a school representation displayed on a video screen, with the networked virtual reality presenting the user as a real-time entity within the virtual school so that the user can interact with other users and system elements. A learning path editor is also provided for allowing users to author student curriculum sequences using graphical icons. A guidance tutor is further provided for coaching a student by displaying a guidance message on the video screen when so indicated by an instructional context. A courseware scheduler is further provided for delivering specific courseware to specific computers during specific time periods. A system monitor is further provided for gathering information in real-time on the state of each computer.

Instructional management system

An interactive education system for teaching patient care to a user is described. The system comprises a patient simulator; a virtual instrument for use with the patient simulator in performing patient care activities; means for sensing an interaction between the virtual instrument and the simulator, and means for providing feedback to the user regarding the interaction between the virtual instrument and the simulator. In one aspect, the system includes a maternal simulator, a fetal simulator, and a neonatal simulator.

Interactive education system for teaching patient care

A tool-workpiece instructional system is provided for simulating operation on a workpiece in the form of a welding site as shown on a display, by a student using a tool such as a welding torch simulator. The torch is a mock-up of as real torch, having mock values and torch tip, but is not supplied with any gas. A light pen and mercury switches are mounted inside to detect torch position and angular position relative to the display. A computer with a control program uses information regarding parameters of torch location relative to the display, including torch angle, torch distance to the display, torch position as projected on the plane of the display, welding rod position (as detected by a touch screen on top of the display) and oxygen and acetylene valve positions of the welding torch, and uses the parameters to determine what would happen to a welding site during a real weld and addresses appropriate segments in a video disc player to display a simulation of the welding site in real time.
