Building a Web-based Education System

There are increasing calls to employ conventional magnetic testers, such as the Epstein frame and single sheet tester, for the accurate measurements of magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials under fully controlled nonsinusoidal flux density waveforms. This paper presents a computerized automated adaptive digital feedback system built for that purpose. We present several examples of the ability of the system to control an arbitrary shape of the flux density waveforms over the frequency range of the data acquisition system (0.5 Hz to 2 kHz) and for peak flux density up to 90% of saturation. The control algorithm is capable of magnetizing magnetic material under controlled sinusoidal, triangular, trapezoidal, and pulsewidth-modulated magnetizing conditions as well as other arbitrary waveforms that do not contain dc components. We provide a full description of the adaptive digital feedback technique together with measurements showing the B-H loops for several magnetic materials under various controlled excitation conditions.

Hardware and software to design virtual laboratory for education in instrumentation and measurement

The Remote Didactic Laboratory Laboratorio Didattico Remoto -LA.DI.RE. “G. Savastano” is an e-learning measurement laboratory supported by the Italian Ministry of Education and University. It provides the students of electric and electronic measurement courses with access to remote measurement laboratories, delivering different didactic activities related to measurement experiments. The core of the software architecture is the integration of the Learning Management System (LMS) with the remotely accessible measurement laboratories through web services and thin client paradigm, providing a new approach to remote experiments on measurement instrumentation. The overview of this paper is on the different solutions concerning the thin client technology, and the solution implemented is described. This solution takes into account the delivered services to students and teachers and permits optimization of the communication performances. The results of the comparison among the performances of different implementations of the thin client paradigm highlight the advantages of the adopted solution. As a consequence, the description of the thin client protocol implemented, together with the presentation of the LMS and delivered services given in a previous paper, makes an exhaustive analysis of the software architecture of the LA.DI.RE. “G. Savastano.”

Remote Didactic Laboratory “G. Savastano,” The Italian Experience for E-Learning at the Technical Universities in the Field of Electrical and Electronic Measurement: Architecture and Optimization of the Communication Performance Based on Thin Client Technology

The paper presents a pre-processing scheme to enhance the resolution of data acquisition systems (DASs) in the presence of band-pass input signals. The proposed solution permits to acquire a seamless data stream with improved resolution and is designed to be efficient in terms of hardware requirements and processing time. In the paper, details on the designed architecture are given, along with an analytical comparison of the resolution improvement achievable with respect to existing techniques. The performance of the solution is assessed through a number of simulative and experimental tests on band-pass signals.

Virtual measurement system for distance education and training

A system for the testing of ADCs at the frequency range of 1 MHz, which was designed and prototyped at the Dept. of Measurement, CTU FEE last year, was extended up to 20 MHz. Low-cost as well as high-quality filters for frequencies about 4.4, 9.5 and 19.5 MHz were manufactured. Experimental results showed that the system is directly applicable for the testing of ADCs with the ENOB up to 11?13 in case of low-cost filters and up to 20 in case of high-quality filters.

Results of dynamic measurement using plug-in A/D boards are influenced not only by quality of the board but also by internal and external environment. Problems of measurements of analog signals in magnetic field are discussed in the present paper. Results depend mainly on magnetic field intensity, direction and frequency, but signal connection and board input configuration are also very important.

Influence of magnetic field on measurements using A/D plug-in boards

A transportable high-stability reference AD device was designed and built to compare the systems for testing the dynamic quality of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) or analog-to-digital (AD) modules. Three different input modules can be used in the frequency range up to 5 MHz. First, this paper refers to the results of an AD device application in the frequency range of the testing signal up to 100 kHz, where four ADC testing systems were compared in different laboratories, and a short time amplitude and/or frequency instability of testing signal generators was evaluated. Second, it describes the first experience of its application in the frequency range from 100-5 MHz.

Evaluation of ADC testing systems using ADC transfer standard

The paper deals with determination of an optimum frequency for the time domain and frequency domain ADC testing. Proposed algorithm for selection of test signal frequency fulfills two common requirements. The first requirement is to get maximum quantity of distinct phases of the sampled values which are uniformly distributed between 0 and 2π; the second one is to avoid overlapping of higher harmonic components aliased in the first Nyquist zone. The algorithm was verified using MATLAB simulations and practical measurements.
