Background: Among all mental health disorders in the general population, anxiety is the most frequent. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are used to manage anxiety in various settings. There is a growing interest among researchers on religion therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention for anxiety management. Hence, due to the importance of Holy Quran in Muslims' lives, this systematic review was performed to assess the studies that evaluated the effect of Quran recitation on anxiety in various settings. Materials and Methods: This systematic review study was performed on articles published between January 1990 and September 2017. Several online databases including SID, Iranmedex, Magiran, IranDoc, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched with the keywords of “Quran,” “anxiety,” “clinical trial.” The risk of bias across all included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool. Results: Of the 973 articles found in the initial search, 28 randomized controlled trials and quasi-experiments were selected for the systematic review. In most studies, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to measure participants' anxiety. Findings of this review revealed a positive effect of listening to Holy Quran recitation in reducing anxiety in various settings. Only one study had reported that anxiety level in Holy Quran recitation group was less than that of the control group, but it was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Based on the available researches, Quran recitation can be used as a useful non-pharmacological treatment to reduce anxiety. However, methodologically strong randomized controlled trials are needed in this area.

Aim The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of listening to music or Quran in reducing cancer patients' anxiety before chemotherapy administration. Reducing anxiety in people with cancer, prior to chemotherapy administration, is a crucial goal in nursing care. Design An experimental comparative study was conducted. Methods A simple randomization sampling method was applied. Two hundred thirty-eight people with cancer who underwent chemotherapy were participated. They are assigned as Quran, music and control groups. Results The overall score of Arabic State Anxiety Inventory in all groups revealed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test among participants. Listening to Quran or music reduced the chemotherapy-induced anxiety. There was no difference between these two ways to reduce anxiety in people with cancer. Listening to Quran or music can be added in nursing care plans prior chemotherapy administrations to reduce cancer patients' anxiety.

Video Education to Improve Preoperative Anxiety in the Bariatric Surgical Patient: A Quality Improvement Project.

Anxiety is a common unpleasant reaction among patients undergoing surgery. Many non-pharmacological methods such as spiritual strength are effective in preoperative anxiety management. This study aimed to assess the effects of listening to Quran recitation on reducing preoperative anxiety. A systematic review was performed in Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Arab World Research Source, and other relevant databases to collect the data. Randomized controlled trials about the effects of listening to Quran recitation on preoperative anxiety reduction in elective surgery were selected without any language and date restriction. Interventions with self-reading/self-recitation were excluded. The Cochran’s Q statistic and the I2 index with 50% threshold were used for calculating the heterogeneity and inconsistency index. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the surgery type. The funnel plot was used to evaluate the possibility of publication bias. Twelve studies were included in the qualitative synthesis and nine studies in the quantitative synthesis. The meta-analysis showed a significant anxiety reduction with listening to Quran recitation. The heterogeneity between the included studies was statistically significant (Q = 23.05, I2 = 65.29, p = 0.003). The pooled effect size of anxiety was d = −8.893 (95% confidence interval (CI) = −10.763 to −7.022) (p < 0.001). The subgroup analysis showed that listening to Quran recitation reduces anxiety in major and minor surgeries. There was no publication bias (t = 0.907, p = 0.39) in the studies. The findings indicated that listening to Quran recitation can be considered a non-invasive and peaceful intervention to reduce preoperative anxiety in elective surgery.

n the United States of America, near 23 million people undergo surgery each year, generally experiencing preoperative anxiety (1). When patients undergo surgery, anxiety and depression can affect their physical and mental states; reducing these preoperative complications results in positive effects on the wellbeing of patients and are likely to positively influence the outcomes of surgery (2). More than 82 percent of patients had fear and anxiety before surgery (3). Anxiety increases blood levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine, resulting in increased blood pressure, heart rate, and myocardial oxygen demand (4). Velensola Millan et al. in their study about “the reasons of anxiety before optional surgery” argue that factors such as fear of clinical environment (35%) fear of surgery (33%) fear of anesthesia (45%) and unawareness about surgery (45%) are the most important reasons of anxiety before surgery (5). Background: Patients experience moderate to high level of anxiety before surgery. Many strategies such as sedative-hypnotic agents are developed to improve anxiety. Objectives: The current study aimed to determine the eect of video and images of operating room on patients' anxiety, before general surgery. Patients and Methods: A clinical trial was performed on 60 patients undergoing general surgery referred to Shahid Beheshti hospi- tal in Kashan, Iran, from 2014 to 2015. By convenient sampling method, sixty patients were selected and randomly allocated into the experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, the video information and images about operating room was played by a laptop for each patient for 30 minutes on the day before surgery and in the morning before surgery. The state anxiety of the two groups was measured after intervention. The control group received verbal information (the usual method in hospitals). Data analysis was conducted using 2 test, independent T-test and paired T-test by SPSS software version 16. Results: The mean scores of state and trait anxiety before and after intervention are presented in result section. In the experimental group, mean scores of state anxiety decreased from 3.1 43.8 to 2.3 32.4, following the intervention (P = 0.02). However, mean scores did not significantly change in the control group (P = 0.3). Conclusion: The current study results indicated that the video and images about operating room can reduce anxiety in patients undergoing general surgery.
