Data on the emission of energetic ions produced in laser–matter interactions have been analyzed for a wide variety of laser wavelengths, energies, and pulse lengths. Strong correlation has been found between the bulk energy per AMU for fast ions measured by charge cups and the x‐ray‐determined hot electron temperature. Five theoretical models have been used to explain this correlation. The models include (1) a steady‐state spherically symmetric fluid model with classical electron heat conduction, (2) a steady‐state spherically symmetric fluid model with flux limited electron heat conduction, (3) a simple analytic model of an isothermal rarefaction followed by a free expansion, (4) the lasnex hydrodynamics code [Comments Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 2, 85 (1975)], calculations employing a spherical expansion and simple initial conditions, and (5) the lasnex code with its full array of absorption, transport, and emission physics. The results obtained with these models are in good agreement with the experiments and indicate that the detailed shape of the correlation curve between mean fast ion energy and hot electron temperature is due to target surface impurities at the higher temperatures (higher laser intensities) and to the expansion of bulk target material at the lower temperatures (lower laser intensities).

Fast ions and hot electrons in the laser–plasma interaction

This paper presents a set of complementary corpuscular diagnostics applied in experiments for investigation of laser-produced plasma as a source of ions. The measuring possibilities and methods for processing experimental data of a cylindrical electrostatic ion energy analyzer, a Thomson parabola ion analyzer, various types of electrostatic probes, a detector of neutral atom fluxes, as well as methods for visualization of ion emission areas are discussed. Special attention was focused on the ion-induced secondary electron emission problem and its influence on the accuracy of the measurements.

Corpuscular diagnostics and processing methods applied in investigations of laser-produced plasma as a source of highly ionized ions

A review of the applications to solids of the laser ion source in mass spectrometry

Faraday probes are a common plasma diagnostic used to determine the local ion charge flux of electric propulsion plumes. Standard practices, guidelines, and recommendations are provided for experimental methods and analysis techniques that aim to standardize community practices, to mitigate test environment effects, and to reduce systematic measurement error in order to improve plume predictions in the space environment. The approaches are applicable to time-averaged plasma properties in the near-field and far-field of electric propulsion plumes, with emphasis on Hall effect thrusters and gridded ion thrusters. Considerations for other electric propulsion technologies are provided, including electrosprays, arcjets, and electromagnetic thruster concepts. Recommended Practice for Use of Faraday Probes in Electric Propulsion Testing

The energy distribution and flux of fast nitrogen particles generated in a Mather-type plasma focus device operating at 0.4 Torr of N/sub 2/ pressure is reported. A Faraday cup operating in the secondary electron emission mode was employed. To determine the total number of beam particles, multiple scattering of the ions was taken into account. It has been possible to register the ion energy up to a lower kinetic energy threshold of /spl ap/50 keV, which is a value much lower than that obtained with a Thomson spectrometer in a previous work.

Analysis of the nitrogen ion beam generated in a low-energy plasma focus device by a Faraday cup operating in the secondary electron emission mode

An ion accelerator has been used to evaluate three types of Faraday cups commonly used to measure plasma expansion characteristics in laser‐produced plasmas. One type of cup was found to have very low secondary emission and is very suitable for absolute measurement of ion numbers and energies.
