Although the significance of supply chain resilience has been well explored, there is much to be explained about its formation and composition. Using systems theory and the Family Resilience model, this chapter offers a series of organizational characteristics that combine to form supply chain resilience. These subsets of supply chain resilience are categorized into three. The first, inherent resilience, comes from the strength of resources that are already possessed, are permanent and inseparable from the supply chain itself. The second, anticipative resilience, are ones developed purposefully to face crises and disruptions. These are preparatory resources that come in the form of excess resources, business continuity plans, or insurance policies. The third type is adaptive resilience, which can come in the form of collaborative capabilities, collective decision-making, and leadership that combines care and concern with the ability to make on the spot decisions. The chapter explains how supply chains, as organizational systems, leverage these three sub-sets to face disruptions.

Resiliency in Supply Chain Systems: A Triadic Framework Using Family Resilience Model

This study attempted to delineate styles of family interaction and behavior during war. Sixty-six families were randomly selected during the first week of the Gulf War and were telephone-interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Qualitative methodology was used to analyze the interview transcripts. Three themes emerged: the emotional atmosphere (degree of expressed stress), mode of family organization, and extent and form of interpersonal relationship. When these categories were considered, four types of families were found: (1) the Anxious Family, characterized by high level of stress, low role distribution, negative interaction style; (2) the Cautious Family, with high stress, clear role allocation, positive interaction among members; (3) the Confident Family, typified by low stress level, clear role allocation, and positive non-interaction; and (4) the Indifferent family, characterized by low stress level, no role allocation, and negative non-interaction. These findings are discussed in terms of recent attempts to clarify the concept and describe the process of family coping, as well as in terms of understanding family behavior in other stressful situations.

Families in the sealed room: interaction patterns of Israeli families during SCUD missile attacks.

As part of a larger prospective study of Israeli and Palestinian families during the peace process, qualitative analysis of data from a subsample of 30 couples was conducted. Couples were classified by frequency of communication about the situation, topics most often discussed, degree of consensus on major issues, emotional role differentiation, and changes in relationship. Based on these classifications, couples were mapped on a multidimensional grid. The plot revealed a variety of interactional patterns in couples under prolonged environmental stress. Couples who reported a deterioration of their relationship had more disagreements regarding the meaning of the peace process and its consequences for the family, and were more concerned with economic issues or the situational ambiguity. Partners with a stronger ideological orientation tended to agree more often and to report an increase in cohesiveness. Between war and Peace: Interactional Patterns of Couples Under Prolonged Uncertainty

Throughout the chapters in this Handbook, research, theory, and methodology have been presented on marriage and family. The content provides much of the background for one to understand the study of family and family science as a discipline. In this chapter, the goal is to explore ideas around teaching family science as a discipline. We will examine the terms used to describe the science and the profession, and where the field fits among social science disciplines as primary, secondary, or tertiary. We will discuss the ethics, theories, and methodologies that many scholars believe should be included in the study of marriage and family and provide a discourse on whether or not a separate discipline of family science exists today. The seven criteria for a field to become a true discipline as described by Burr and Leigh (1983) will be explored. We will examine what “teaching” about families entails as the field prepares professionals. Finally, we will identify some emerging and futuristic topics for family science educators to consider.
