Essential guide to qualitative methods in organizational research

Research articles on women's entrepreneurship reveal, in spite of intentions to the contrary and in spite of inconclusive research results, a tendency to recreate the idea of women as being secondary to men and of women's businesses being of less significance or, at best, as being a complement. Based on a discourse analysis, this article discusses what research practices cause these results. It suggests new research directions that do not reproduce women's subordination but capture more and richer aspects of women's entrepreneurship.

Understanding the factors that promote or mitigate new firm birth is crucial to regional economic development efforts, since a high level of new firm creation significantly contributes to regional economic vitality and is a major signal of a dynamic economy. The literature suggests that various factors such as unemployment, population density/ growth, industrial structure, human capital, the availability of financing and entrepreneurial characteristics significantly influence regional variation in new firm birth rates. Social entrepreneurship has recently received greater recognition from the public sector, as well as from scholars. However, the lack of a unifying paradigm in the field has lead to a proliferation of definitions. Moreover, several approaches of the phenomenon, as well as different schools of thought, have emerged in different regions of the world. At first glance, because of different conceptions of capitalism and of the government's role, there seems to be a difference between the American and the European conceptions of social entrepreneurship. A three-fold typology of owner-managers and their businesses has been developed by Chell et al. (1991). The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how such a categorization may be modelled using neural networks and the results used for prediction purposes. Artificial neural networks are described and in particular the back-propagation method. The data on 31 business owners are divided into two sets; 25 are used as a training set and the remaining 6 used to evaluate the performance of the network after training. An example is selected in order to demonstrate the application of the trained network. The aptness and some of the drawbacks of this method are discussed.
