Techniques for adjusting transmit power to mitigate both intra-sector interference to a serving base station and inter-sector interference to neighbor base stations are described. The amount of inter-sector interference that a terminal may cause may be roughly estimated based on the total interference observed by each neighbor base station, channel gains for the serving and neighbor base stations, and the current transmit power level. The transmit power may be decreased if high interference is observed by a neighbor base station and increased otherwise. The transmit power may be adjusted by a larger amount and/or more frequently if the terminal is located closer to the neighbor base station observing high interference and/or if the current transmit power level is higher, and vice versa. The intra-sector interference is maintained within an acceptable level by limiting a received SNR for the terminal to be within a range of allowable SNRs.

Power control for a wireless communication system utilizing orthogonal multiplexing

A method and apparatus for controlling transmission power levels in a mobile communication system. The method provides for a closed-loop power control method. A mobile station provides information on the quality of the signal received from the base station, and the base station responds by adjusting the power allocated to that user in a shared base station signal. The transmission power is adjusted initially by a large increment and then ramped down at an increasingly decreasing rate. The mobile station also provides information to the base station as to its relative velocity and the base station adjusts its transmission power in accordance with this velocity information.

Method and apparatus for performing fast power control in a mobile communication system

Techniques for transmitting voice/data and packet data services such that packet data transmissions have less impact on voice/data transmissions. In one aspect, voice/data and packet data can be multiplexed within a transmission interval such that the available resources are efficiently utilized. In another aspect, the amount of variation in the total tansmit power from a base station is controlled to reduce degradation to transmissions from this and other base stations. In a specific method for concurrently transmitting a number of types of data, a first data type (e.g., voice, overhead, and some data) and a second data type are respectively processed in accordance with first and second signal processing schemes to generate first and second payloads, respectively. First and second partitions are then defined in a transmission interval. The first and second payloads are time multiplexed into the first and second partitions, respectively, and the multiplexed payloads are transmitted.

Method and apparatus for multiplexing high-speed packet data transmission with voice/data transmission

A system and method for canceling interference present in a code-division multiple access (CDMA) channel signal received at a CDMA receiver that is caused by multipath components of a transmitted pilot channel signal or by soft handoff conditions is computationally efficient because it operates at symbol rates. The channel signal from which such multipath interference is canceled can be either a traffic (data) channel or the pilot channel itself. Interference signals are produced in groups corresponding to the fingers of the CDMA rake receiver. The interference signals corresponding to each finger are used to cancel interference in the other fingers.

A wireless telecommunications system includes at least one base station, at least one mobile station, and power control circuitry implemented in the base station and the mobile station. N/X power control indications sent from the mobile station to the base station are used to provide closed loop power control to N subchannels, where N is a total number of subchannels in use between the base station and the mobile station, and where X is a positive integer having a value within a range greater than or equal to one and less than N such that N/X, in one case, is an integer number. In one embodiment each of the N subchannels is transmitted through a separate one of N adjustable gain stages, and N/X power control indications generated at the mobile station are employed to vary the gain of the N adjustable gain stages. In another embodiment a plurality of adjustable gain stages associated with a plurality of subchannels are controlled using a same gain control signal. In the presently preferred, but not limiting embodiment, the system is a wideband, multi-carrier spread spectrum system, and the N subchannels can be overlaid on up to N other carriers.

Method and apparatus for providing power control in a multi-carrier wide band CDMA system

Apparatus, and an associated method, for effectuating power control in a radio communication system, such as an IS-95/IS-2000 system which deploys 1×EV-DO technology. At a mobile station, a channel indicia measurer measures channel conditions upon a radio link. Responsive thereto, a data rate selector selects a data rate at which subsequent data is to be communicated to the mobile station. The selection is returned to the network part of the communication system. A selector selects the power level at which to communicate the subsequent data to the mobile station responsive to the requested data rate. The requested data rate is used as a metric by which to select the power level at which to communicate the subsequent data to the mobile station.

Apparatus, and associated method, for facilitating selection of power levels at which to communicate data in a radio communication system

A method detects an absence of a transmitted frame in a wireless communications system that operates with a discontinuous transmission (DTX) protocol between a transmitter and a receiver. The method includes decoding a received signal over a frame period to determine a cumulative metric; normalizing the cumulative metric and comparing the normalized cumulative metric or a zero state cumulative metric. The wireless communications system may be a CDMA system, the receiver may be contained within a mobile station, and the determination of whether the frame was transmitted frame or a non-transmitted frame can be employed, as one non-limiting example, during execution of a power control algorithm.
