An electric vehicle charging station is described. The charging station includes an input connector configured for coupling with an alternating current (AC) power source and an output connector configured for coupling with an electric vehicle. The charging station also includes a variable-output transformer comprising a primary side and a secondary side. The primary side is coupled to the input connector and the secondary side is coupled to the output connector and configured to be in selective electromagnetic communication with an energy storage device associated with the electric vehicle. The charging station also includes a controller coupled to the transformer and configured to determine a level of voltage to provide to the electric vehicle.

An automated vehicle (AV) can be managed by a backend system and include an acceleration, braking, and steering system, an AV control system to maneuver the AV through road traffic throughout a given region, a memory to store a network resource map indicating locations of base stations and available network types providing coverage from the base stations throughout the given region, a communications array to transmit and receive communications from the backend system, and a communications system. The communications system can utilize the network resource map to dynamically select optimal network types from proximate base stations to communicate data with the backend system, and dynamically configure the communications array to connect with the optimal network types to transmit and receive data with the backend system.

Automated vehicle communications system

A control interface for a first vehicle operation of an autonomous vehicle. The control interface detects an autonomy activation signal to enable a first automated controller to control the first vehicle operation. The control interface then couples the first automated controller to a vehicle control platform configured to manage the first vehicle operation in response to input signals. For example, the control inter face may include a double-throw electromechanical relay that switchably couples the vehicle control platform to one of the first automated controller or a manual input mechanism. The control interface then provides the input signals to the vehicle control platform from the first automated controller.

A backend communications system can manage communications, using transmission control protocol (TCP), between a fleet of AVs in a given region and a backend system that manages transportation for the fleet of AVs. For each of the fleet of AVs, the backend communications system can select a designated one of a plurality of communication channels to transmit and receive transmission acknowledgments (ACKs). The backend communications system can transmit data packets to the fleet of AVs using any number of communication channels and receive ACKs from each of the fleet of AVs over the designated communication channel.

A method for charging an energy storage system (ESS) from an AC line voltage having differing input voltages (e.g., 120 Vac or 240 Vac), the method includes a) determining which of the AC line voltages is provided for charging the ESS as a charging AC voltage; b) boosting the charging AC voltage to an intermediate voltage responsive to the provided AC line voltage; c) scaling, responsive to the particular one of the AC line voltages, the intermediate voltage to a secondary voltage using a scaling factor; and d) converting the secondary voltage to a charging voltage applied to the ESS.
