A quantitative meta-analysis evaluating the effects of phonemic awareness (PA) instruction on learning to read and spell was conducted by the National Reading Panel. There were 52 studies published in peer-reviewed journals, and these contributed 96 cases comparing the outcomes of treatment and control groups. Analysis of effect sizes revealed that the impact of PA instruction on helping children acquire PA was large and statistically significant (d = 0.86). PA instruction exerted a moderate, statistically significant impact on reading (d = 0.53) and spelling (d = 0.59). Not only word reading but also reading comprehension benefited. PA instruction impacted reading under all the conditions examined although effect sizes were larger under some conditions. PA instruction helped various types of children: normally developing readers as well as at-risk and disabled readers; preschoolers, kindergartners, and first graders; low socioeconomic status children as well as mid-high SES. PA instruction improved reading, but it did not improve spelling in disabled readers. PA instruction was more effective when it was taught with letters than without letters, when one or two PA skills were taught than multiple PA skills, when children were taught in small groups than individually or in classrooms, and when instruction lasted between 5 and 18 hours rather than longer. Classroom teachers were effective in teaching PA to their students. Effect sizes were larger for studies using more rigorous experimental designs, with rigor assessments drawn from Troia (1999). In sum, PA instruction was found to make a statistically significant contribution to reading acquisition. Un meta-analisis cuantitativo que evaluo los efectos de la instruccion en conciencia fonemica (CF) sobre el aprendizaje de la lectura y la escritura fue llevado a cabo por el Panel Nacional de Lectura (National Reading Panel). Se tomaron 52 estudios, publicados en revistas con referato, que aportaron 96 casos en los que se comparo el resultado de los grupos de tratamiento y de control. El analisis de las magnitudes del efecto revelo que el impacto de la instruccion en CF sobre el desarrollo de la CF en los ninos fue grande y estadisticamente significativo (d = 0.86). La instruccion en CF ejercio un impacto moderado, estadisticamente significativo en la lectura (d = 0.53) y escritura (d = 0.59). No solo se beneficio la lectura de palabras, sino tambien la comprension lectora. La instruccion en CF impacto en la lectura, en todas las condiciones examinadas, sin embargo las magnitudes del efecto fueron mayores en algunas condiciones. La instruccion en CF ayudo a distintos tipos de ninos: lectores de desarrollo normal, lectores de riesgo y lectores con dificultades; ninos de jardin, preescolar y primer grado; ninos de NSE bajo y ninos de NSE medio-alto. La instruccion en CF mejoro la lectura pero no la escritura en los lectores con dificultades. La instruccion en CF fue mas efectiva cuando se realizo con apoyo de las letras que cuando no se ensenaron las letras, cuando se ensenaron una o dos habilidades de CF que cuando se ensenaron multiples habilidades, cuando se insruyo a los ninos en pequenos grupos que cuando se realizo individualmente o en el aula y cuando la instruccion duro entre 5 y 18 horas que cuando abarco mas tiempo. Los docentes fueron eficaces en la ensenanza de la CF a los estudiantes. Las magnitudes del efecto fueron mayores en los estudios que utilizaron disenos experimentales mas rigurosos, con evaluaciones de rigor tomadas de Troia (1999). En suma, se hallo que la instruccion en CF constituye una contribucion significativa a la adquisicion de la lectura.

Eine quantitative Meta-Analyse, welche Auswirkungen phonischen Aufnahmebewusseins (PA) beim Erlernen des Lesens und Buchstabierens bewertet, wurde vom Nationalen Lesegremium durchgefuhrt. Es wurden 52 Studien in von Lehrern rezensierten Fachzeitschriften publiziert und diese nannten 96 Falle, bei denen die Ergebnisse von Anwendungs- und Kontrollgruppen verglichen wurden. Die Analyse uber Wirksamkeitsausmase ergab, das der Einflus von PA-Anweisungen in der Unterstutzung der Kinder beim Erwerb von PA gros und statistisch bedeutend (d = 0.86) war. PA-Anweisungen ubten einen ausgleichenden, statitisch bedeutsamen Einflus aufs Lesen (d = 0.53) und Buchstabieren (d = 0.59) aus. Nicht nur das Lesen von Wortern, sondern auch das Leseverstandnis wurde begunstigt. PA-Anweisungen beeinflusten das Lesen unter all den untersuchten Bedingungen, obwohl die Ausmase der Auswirkungen bei einigen Bedingungen groser waren. PA-Anweisungen halfen unterschiedlich gearteten Kindern: normal sich entwickelnde Leser, sowie auch risikobedingte und behinderte Leser; Vorschuler, Kindergartenteilnehmer und Erstklassler; Kinder der unteren Gundschulstufen (SES) als auch mittlerer und hoherer Grundschulstufen (SES). PA-Anweisungen verbesserten das Lesen, nicht jedoch das Buchstabieren bei behinderten Lesern. PA-Anweisungen waren wirksamer, wenn sie zusammen mit den Buchstaben statt ohne Buchstaben unterrichtet wurden, wenn jeweils eine oder zwei PA-Fertigkeiten statt ein Mehrfaches an PA-Fertigkeiten unterrichtet wurde, wenn Kinder in kleinen Gruppen statt einzeln unterrichtet oder in Klassenraumen, und wenn der Unterricht insgesamt zwischen 5 und 18 Stunden andauerte, statt langfristiger. Klassenlehrer waren beim Unterricht von PA erfolgreich mit ihren Schulern. Das Wirkungsausmas war unter Nutzung strengerer Experimentierplane fur den Unterricht groser, mit den von Troia (1999) abgeleiteten straffen Bewertungen. Zusammengefast fand man, das die PA-Anweisung einen statistisch nachweisbar bedeutenden Beitrag zum Erwerb von Lesefertigkeiten leisten.

Une meta-analyse quantitative pour evaluer les effets de l'enseignement de la conscience phonemique (CP) sur l'apprentissage de la lecture et de l'ecriture a ete conduite par la Commission Nationale de Lecture. Elle a porte sur 52 etudes publiees dans des journaux a comite de redaction ayant conduit a 96 etudes comparant les resultats de groupes experimentaux et controles. L'analyse de l'importance des effets revele que l'enseignement de la CP sur le developpement de la CP a un impact large et statistiquement significatif (d = 0.86). L'enseignement de la CP a un effet modere, statistiquement significatif (d = 0.53) sur l'ecriture (d = 0.59). Non seulement la lecture de mots en beneficie mais egalement la comprehension. L'enseignement de la CP a un impact sur la lecture dans toutes les conditions examinees, bien que la taille de l'effet soit plus large dans certaines conditions. L'enseignement de la CP est une aide pour differents types d'enfants: aussi bien pour ceux qui apprennent a lire normalement que pour les enfants a risque et pour ceux qui ont des difficultes; pour les enfants d'ecole maternelle ou de premiere annee de primaire: pour les enfants de milieu social defavorise aussi bien que pour ceux de classe moyenne. L'enseignement de la CP facilite le developpement de la lecture mais pas celui de l'ecriture chez les enfants en difficulte. L'enseignement de la CP a plus d'effet quand il a lieu avec des lettres que sans lettres, quand on enseigne une ou deux competences de CP que de multiples competences de CP, quand il a lieu en petit groupe que individuellement ou en salle de classe, et quand l'enseignement dureentre 5 et 18 heures plutot que plus longtemps. L'enseignement de la CP en classe par des enseignants est efficace. La taille des effets est plus grande quand les etudes utilisent des plans experimentaux plus rigoureux, et des evaluations rigoureuses provenant de Troia (1999). En bref, il apparait que l'enseignement de la CP apporte une contribution statistiquement significative a l'acquisition de la lecture.

Phonemic Awareness Instruction Helps Children Learn to Read: Evidence From the National Reading Panel's Meta-Analysis

Is there a causal link from phonological awareness to success in learning to read

In a quantitative meta-analysis, the effects of phonological awareness training on reading were shown. In a homogeneous set of U.S. studies with a randomized or matched design, the combined effect sizes for phonological awareness and reading were d = 0.73 (r = .34, N = 739) and d = 0.70 (r = .33, N = 745), respectively. Thus, experimentally manipulated phonological awareness explains about 12% of the variance in word-identification skills. The combined effect size for long-term studies of the influence of phonological awareness training on reading was much smaller, d = 0.16 (r = .08, N = 1,180). Programs combining a phonological and a letter training were more effective than a purely phonological training. Furthermore, training effects were stronger with posttests assessing simple decoding skills than with real-word-identification tests. In sum, phonological awareness is an important but not a sufficient condition for early reading.

Phonological awareness and early reading : A meta-analysis of experimental training studies

This article integrates the findings in the special issue with a comprehensive review of the evidence for seven central questions about the role of naming-speed deficits in developmental reading disabilities. Cross-sectional, longitudinal, and cross-linguistic research on naming-speed processes, timing processes, and reading is presented. An evolving model of visual naming illustrates areas of difference and areas of overlap between naming speed and phonology in their underlying requirements. Work in the cognitive neurosciences is used to explore two nonexclusive hypotheses about the putative links between naming speed and reading processes and about the sources of disruption that may cause subtypes of reading disabilities predicted by the double-deficit hypothesis. Finally, the implications of the work in this special issue for diagnosis and intervention are elaborated.

Naming-Speed Processes, Timing, and Reading A Conceptual Review

This article presents results from a longitudinal study of children of dyslexic and of normally reading parents. The children were followed from the beginning of kindergarten (at the age of 6, 1 year before reading instruction in Denmark) until the beginning of the second grade. Children of dyslexic parents were found to have an increased risk of dyslexia (a 4.3 odds ratio) when dyslexia was defined as poor phonological recoding (poor reading of nonwords and pseudohomophones of real words). All language measures in kindergarten were statistically significant predictors of dyslexia. Logistic regression analyses with backwards stepwise selection indicated that three measures contributed independently to the prediction of dyslexia: letter naming, phoneme identification, and distinctness of phonological representations. The measure of distinctness of phonological representations also contributed significantly to the prediction of poor phoneme awareness in Grade 2—even when differences in early syllable and phoneme awareness, articulation, and productive and receptive vocabulary were accounted for. The results suggest that the quality of phonological representations in the mental lexicon is a determinant of the development of both segmental (e.g., phoneme) awareness and of the acquisition of phonological recoding skills in reading.

ESTE TRABAJO presenta los resultados de un estudio longitudinal de ninos hijos de padres dislexicos y normales. El seguimiento de los ninos se produjo desde el comienzo del preescolar (a la edad de seis anos, un ano antes de comenzar la ensenanza de la lectura en Dinamarca), hasta el comienzo de segundo grado. Se hallo que entre los hijos de padres dislexicos aumentaba el riesgo de dislexia (a razon del 4.3) cuando se definia la dislexia como problemas de recodificacion fonologica (problemas para leer pseudo-palabras y pseudo-homofonos de palabras reales). Todas las medidas de lenguaje tomadas en preescolar fueron predictoras de dislexia estadisticamente significativas. Los analisis de regresion logistica con seleccion por pasos indicaron que las tres medidas contribuian independientemente a la prediccion de la dislexia: nombrar letras, identificar fonemas y la precision de las representaciones fonologicas. La medida de precision de las representaciones fonologicas tambien contribuyo significativamente a predecir problemas de conciencia fonologica en segundo grado - aun cuando se tomaron en cuenta las diferencias en conciencia silabica y fonologica tempranas. Los resultados sugieren que la calidad de las representaciones fonologicas en el lexico mental es determinante tanto del desarrollo de la conciencia segmental (por ej., fonologica) como de la adquisicion de habilidades fonologicas en la lectura.

DIESER ARTIKEL stellt die Ergebnisse einer Langzeitstudie mit Kindern von dyslexischen und normal-lesenden Eltern vor. Die Kinder wurden mit Beginn des Kindergartens (im Alter von sechs, ein Jahr vor Beginn des Leseunterrichts in Danemark) bis zum Eintritt in das zweite Schuljahr betreut. Es wurde festgestellt, das Kinder von dyslexischen Eltern einem erhohten Risiko der Dyslexie unterliegen (im Wahrscheinlichkeitsverhaltnis von 4.3), wobei Dyslexie als unzureichende phonologische Wiedergabe definiert wurde (Leseschwache mit nicht-bestimmbaren Worten und scheinbaren Gleichlauten bzw. Pseudo-Homophonie bei realen Worten). Alle im Kindergarten ermittelten sprachlichen Masnahmen erwiesen sich als statistisch bedeutende Hinweise auf Dyslexie. Logistische Regressionsanalysen mit schrittweisen, ruckwirkenden Betrachtungsablaufen indizierten drei wesentliche Masnahmen, die unabhangig voneinander zur Bestimmung von Dyslexie beitragen: Buchstabieren, phonemische Unterscheidung und Deutlichkeit der phonologischen Ausdrucksweisen. Die systematische Bemessung der Deutlichkeit der phonologischen Reprasentation trug ebenfalls wesentlich zur Bestimmung eines voraussichtlich auftretenden geschwachten phonemischen Bewustseins bei Schulern in der zweiten Klasse bei, sogar wenn Unterschiede in der fruhen Erkenntnis von Silbenbildung und phonemischer Wahrnehmung, Artikulation bzw. Wortgliederung, sowie in produktiver und rezeptiver Wortbildung ermittelt wurden. Die Ergebnisse weisen daraufhin, das die Qualitat der phonologischen Vorstellungen im mentalen Lexikon ein Bestimmungsfaktor in der Entwicklung beider segmentaler (z.B. phonemischer) Aufnahmefahigkeiten und der Aneignung von phonologischen Wiedergabefahigkeiten beim Lesen ist.

CE PAPIER presente des resultats provenant d'une etude longitudinale d'enfants de parents dyslexiques ou lisant normalement. Les enfants ont ete suivis du debut du jardin d'enfants (a six ans, un an avant l'enseignement de la lecture au Danemark) jusqu'au commencement de la seconde annee. On a trouve que les enfants de parents dyslexiques presentent un plus grand risque de dyslexie (4.3 fois plus) quand la dyslexie est definie comme un faible recodage phonologique (faible lecture de non-mots et de pseudo-homophones de mots reels). Tous les indicateurs langagiers au jardin d'enfants sont des predicteurs statistiquement significatifs de dyslexie. Des analyses de regression avec selection retroactive variable par variable ont montre que trois mesures contribuent independam ment a predire la dyslexie: la denomination de lettres, l'identification de phonemes, et la precision dans les representations phonologiques. La mesure de la precision dans les representations phonologiques contribue aussi de maniere significative a predire une faible conscience phonemique en deuxieme annee, meme si les differences initiales de conscience de la syllabe et du phoneme, de l'articulation, et du vocabulaire emis ou produit sont prises en consideration. Les resultats suggerent que la qualite des representations phonologiques dans le lexique interne est un determinant du developpement tant de la conscience segmentale (par exemple du phoneme) que de l'acquisition des habiletes de recodage phonologique en lecture.

Predicting dyslexia from kindergarten : The importance of distinctness of phonological representations of lexical items

The present study assessed 486 first-quarter first graders on their reading and phonologicalprocessing skills and intelligence. Based on this assessment, and using the classification data from Hurford et al.'s (1993) study, 99 children were identified as being at risk for reading difficulties: 53 children at risk for reading disabilities (RD) and 46 children at risk for becoming “garden-variety” poor readers (GV). Half of the RD and GV groups received the phonologicalprocessing intervention. Posttraining assessment indicated that the training procedure not only was effective in increasing the phonological-processing skills of the trained participants, but also increased their reading ability. Both of the RD and GV trained groups benefited from the training. Analyses also indicated that the initial screening device was somewhat less accurate in the present study in identifying at-risk children than in our previous studies (85% us. approximately 9896, respectively).
