Bark beetle outbreaks in western North America: Causes and consequences

TL;DR: Since 1990, native bark beetles have killed billions of trees across millions of acres of forest from Alaska to northern Mexico, and several of the current outbreaks, which are occurring simultaneously across western North America, are the largest and most severe in recorded history as discussed by the authors.

Trend of two invasives: the banded and European elm bark beetles

TL;DR: The banded elm bark beetle (BEBB) seems to attack standing trees more aggressively and appears now more abundant than EEBB in the Rocky Mountain region, suggesting that BEBB may have displaced EEBB and/or is better able to colonize regions beyond EEBB's range.
