The current study reports the development from the Male Role Norms Inventory-Revised (MRNI-R; Levant, Rankin, Williams, Hasan, & Smalley, 2010) of the 21-item MRNI-Short Form (MRNI-SF). Confirmatory factor analysis of MRNI-SF responses from a sample of 1,017 undergraduate participants (549 men, 468 women) indicated that the best fitting \"bifactor\" model incorporated the hypothesized 7-factor structure while explicitly modeling an additional, general traditional masculinity ideology factor. Specifically, each item-level indicator loaded on 2 factors: a general traditional masculinity ideology factor and a specific factor corresponding to 1 of the 7 hypothesized traditional masculinity ideology norms. The bifactor model was assessed for measurement invariance across gender groups, with findings of full configural invariance and partial metric invariance, such that factor loadings were equivalent across the gender groups for the 7 specific factors but not for the general traditional masculinity ideology factor. Theoretical explanations for this latter result include the potential that men's sense of self or identity may be engaged when responding to questions asking to what extent they agree or disagree with normative statements about their behavior, a possibility that could be investigated in future research by examining the associations of the general and specific factors with measures of masculine identity. Additional exploratory invariance analyses demonstrated latent mean differences between men and women on 4 of the 8 factors, and equivocal results for invariance of item intercepts, item uniquenesses, and factor variances-covariances.

Development, confirmatory factor analytic investigation of structure, and measurement invariance across gender

Background Low/no-income Latino men are disproportionately burdened by chronic disease morbidity and mortality, which is often compounded by persistent exposure to stress. Chronic stress is a key mediating factor in pathways linking macro-level socio-structural forces to micro-level behavioral factors with negative health outcomes. Being that Latinxs continue to be one of the fastest growing populations in the U.S., it is imperative to better understand the roots of stress pathways and explore multi-level interventions. Methods This study presents qualitative findings from in-depth interviews with Puerto Rican men (95%) living in Springfield, Massachusetts. We utilized the Minority Stress Model (MSM) first posited by Ilan Meyers, as a framework to understand stress and stress processes amongst Puerto Rican men. We mapped our data onto Meyers' MSM, which allowed us to find diverging themes and identify areas for expansion. Results As expected, participants reported stress rooted in experiences of racism and prejudice, expectations of rejection, English-language acquisition, family relationships, insecure housing, precarious employment, and lack of resources. Nevertheless, the MSM did not account for the historical contexts that, as our findings indicate, are used to filter and understand their experiences with everyday stressors. Participants described and linked histories of colonial violence and movement and migration to their stress and community wellbeing. Discussion Findings suggest the need to expand the current MSM and our conceptualization of the stress process to include historical understandings when contextualizing present-day stress and future interventions. We propose an expanded heuristic model that delineates the impact of distinctive historical trajectories that aid in interpreting racial health disparities amongst minoritized populations. Future multi-level interventions should give weight to highlighting history and how this impacts the present, in this case including the culpability of U.S. policy regarding Puerto Rico and the adverse health effects for Puerto Rican men on the mainland.

Uncovering Historical Legacies to Contextualize Health Inequities in Puerto Rican Men: An Expansion of the Minority Stress Model

OBJECTIVE
To identify strategies used to recruit and retain underrepresented populations and populations with arthritis or fibromyalgia into behavioral programs targeting exercise, physical activity, or chronic disease self-management.


METHODS
Five bibliographic databases were searched for articles published between January 2000 and May 2022. The search focused on strategies and best practices for recruiting and retaining underrepresented populations or populations with arthritis or fibromyalgia into disease self-management or physical activity/exercise programs. Abstracts and full-text articles were screened for inclusion by 2 independent reviewers, and 2 reviewers extracted data from included articles.


RESULTS
Of the 2,800 articles, a total of 43 publications (31 interventions, 8 reviews, 4 qualitative/descriptive) met criteria and were included. The majority of studies focused on physical activity/exercise (n=36) and targeted African American (n=17), Hispanic (n=9), or arthritis populations (n=7). Recruitment strategies frequently used included having race- or community-matched team members, flyers and information sessions in areas frequented by population, targeted emails/mailings, and word of mouth referrals. Retention strategies used included having race- or community-matched team members, incentives, being flexible, and facilitating attendance. Most studies used multiple recruitment and retention strategies.


CONCLUSION
This scoping review highlighted the importance of a multifaceted recruitment and retention plan for underrepresented populations and populations with arthritis or fibromyalgia in behavioral intervention programs targeting exercise, physical activity, or chronic disease self-management. Additional research is needed to better understand the individual effects of different strategies and the costs associated with the various recruitment/retention methods in underrepresented populations and populations with arthritis.

Recruitment and retention strategies for underrepresented populations and adults with arthritis in behavioral interventions: a scoping review.

Breast cancer prevalence has increased globally, with 12.2% of breast cancer cases identified in China. Obesity and unhealthy lifestyles are major risk factors for breast cancer. We conducted a randomized control trial to assess the feasibility and evaluate the preliminary effect of the Smartphone-Based Cancer and Obesity Prevention Education (SCOPE) program among adult biological women with a waist circumference greater than 80 cm. The SCOPE program includes tailored and culturally appropriate educational information for obesity and breast cancer prevention delivered by the research team via WeChat. The control group received non-tailored general health information via WeChat. A total of 102 women (52 intervention, 50 control) participated, and 87 (85%) completed 6-month follow-up assessments. For the primary study outcome at 6 months, women using SCOPE significantly reduced waist circumference (Cohen’s d = −0.39, p < 0.001). For secondary outcomes at 6 months, women using SCOPE significantly reduced BMI (d = −0.18, p = 0.001) and increased breast cancer-related knowledge (d = 0.48, p = 0.001) and attitude (d = 1.39, p < 0.01). No significant findings were found regarding diet self-efficacy, physical self-efficacy, or breast cancer screening barriers. The results suggest the intervention has great potential to promote the health and wellness of women.
