SCRIPTURE IN HISTORY: A SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY OF THE CHRISTIAN BIBLE Joseph K. Gordon, B.A., M.Div. Marquette University This work utilizes advances in philosophical hermeneutics, the historical study of Christian Scripture, and traditional theological resources to articulate a systematic theology of the Christian Bible. Chapter one introduces the challenges of the contemporary ecclesial and academic situations of Christian Scripture and invokes and explains a functional notion of systematic theology as a resource for meeting those challenges. Chapter two examines the use of the rule of faith by Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine to locate the emergence of Christian Scripture within the faith of early Christian churches. It shows that structured, intelligible Christian belief and thought are developing and operative in Christian communities and that such faith guided engagement with Christian Scripture. Chapter three summarizes the judgments of the previous chapter, invokes the doctrines of the Nicene Creed as a rule of faith for locating Scripture within the economic work of the Triune God, and supplements the Creed with judgments and hypotheses regarding divine and human freedom and action and the missions of the Son of God and the Holy Spirit in human history. Such resources provide heuristics of the divine contexts of Christian Scripture. Since Christian Scripture bears the influence of its human transmitters and serves distinctive human purposes, chapter four articulates a philosophical and theological anthropology as an account of the human context of Christian Scripture. Chapters five and six explain the nature and purpose of Christian Scripture within the divine and human contexts of the previous two chapters. The former offers a historical overview and theological evaluation of the material history and diversity of Christian Scripture. The latter provides an account of the unity of Christian Scripture. Scripture is one, despite its diversity, because of the unified work of the Holy Spirit in inspiring and illuminating it in Christian community, because of the unity of its reference to the revelatory work of the Triune God centering on Jesus Christ, and finally because of its usefulness for bearing witness to and facilitating the work of the Holy Spirit and the Son of God in history.

This book contributes to an extensive number of scholarly works produced in 2017 which commemorate the scientific revolution and paradigm shift that occurred in 1517. The year 2017 marks the 500th celebration of the Reformation actuated by Martin Luther when he published what later became known as the Ninety-Five Theses on indulgences. The Reformation was a religious, social, cultural and political event that reshaped the landscape of modern Europe and has had an influence on parts of the world far beyond. This includes the ‘far South’, such as South Africa, where the legacy of the Reformers has moulded institutional and individual lives across boundaries of ethnicity and beliefs. Worldwide celebrations of this quincentenary anniversary provide scholars with an opportunity to reflect anew on the consequences and lasting import of the Reformation. This book provides one such a platform by discussing the scientific relevance of Reformed theology, specifically with regard to biblical, historical and systematic-theological themes. Comprising a collection of essays by scholars belonging to the Reformed tradition, it aims at examining the historical heritage of the Reformation, the current state of discourse in Reformed theology as well as the contemporary relevance of a Reformed approach to theology. It contains biblical, historical-theological and systematic-theological perspectives and addresses a variety of issues such as biblical interpretation, text-criticism, translation, constructive impulses emanating from classical Reformed thought, Christian freedom, anthropology and dialogue with non-Reformed traditions. Although the approaches followed are by no means exhaustive, they do provide the reader with some indication of approaches followed in Reformed discourse.

RESURRECTION HOPE IN DANIEL 12:2: AN EXERCISE IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY Mitchell Loyd Chase, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chair: Dr. James M. Hamilton, Jr. This dissertation argues that Daniel relied on earlier Old Testament texts and theological convictions when he expressed the hope of bodily resurrection, and his expression informed and shaped subsequent nonbiblical and biblical authors. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis, methodology, and preliminary issues pertinent to the following study. Chapter 2 is a survey of research. This survey shows what proposals scholars have made regarding the emergence of resurrection hope in the Old Testament, it references the intertestamental literature that scholars believe Daniel 12:2 influenced, and it cites the New Testament passages that scholars believe may echo Daniel 12:2. Chapter 3 sets Daniel 12:2 in its context. Relevant considerations include the structure of the book of Daniel, the precursors of resurrection in the book, and a detailed exegesis of Daniel 12:2. Chapter 4 examines the seeds of resurrection hope sown in the Old Testament prior to Daniel 12:2. This study progresses through the Law, Prophets, and Writings. By looking for theological convictions, images, and expressions that advocate a belief in resurrection, it will be evident Daniel 12:2 was not the first occurrence of such hope. Instead, Daniel 12:2 had many implicit and explicit precursors in the Law, Prophets, and Writings. Chapter 5 focuses on the intertestamental literature in order to show and explain how Daniel 12:2 influenced authors of pseudepigraphal and apocryphal literature. Chapter 6 focuses on the New Testament authors and explains the influence of Daniel 12:2 on the Gospels, the book of Acts, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse. This influence is not only lexical but conceptual, and it is the latter kind of influence that has been neglected with regard to Daniel 12:2. Chapter 7 is the conclusion. It summarizes the evidence presented in the foregoing chapters as well as reiterates the conclusions drawn from this evidence.
