Chemical and microbial remediation of hexavalent chromium from contaminated soil and mining/metallurgical solid waste: a review.

This public health statement tells you about chromium and the effects of exposure to it.The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies the most serious hazardous waste sites in the nation. These sites are then placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) and are targeted for long-term federal clean-up activities. Chromium has been found in at least 1,127 of the 1,699 current or former NPL sites. Although the total number of NPL sites evaluated for this substance is not known, the possibility exists that the number of sites at which chromium is found may increase in the future as more sites are evaluated. This information is important because these sites may be sources of exposure and exposure to this substance may be harmful.When a substance is released either from a large area, such as an industrial plant, or from a container, such as a drum or bottle, it enters the environment. Such a release does not always lead to exposure. You can be exposed to a substance only when you come in contact with it. You may be exposed by breathing, eating, or drinking the substance, or by skin contact.If you are exposed to chromium, many factors will determine whether you will be harmed. These factors include the dose (how much), the duration (how long), the form (chromium VI as opposed to chromium III), and how you come in contact with it. You must also consider any other chemicals you are exposed to and your age, sex, diet, family traits, lifestyle, and state of health.

Toxicological Profile for Chromium

Chromium reaches the soil environment through waste disposal emanating from a number of industrial activities, including coal-fired power production, electroplating, leather tanning, timber treatment, pulp production, and mineral ore and petroleum refining. Of the heavy metals, chromium (Cr) is a major pollutant, poses a great threat to flora and fauna and persists for long time. The most abundant species of Cr—Cr(III) and Cr(VI)—have very different properties. The toxicity, mobility, and bioavailability of Cr mainly depend on its speciation. In the natural environment, Cr(III) is most immobile, less soluble and stable, whereas Cr(VI) is highly mobile, soluble and bioavailable. Redox reactions play an important role in the interconversion of Cr(VI) and Cr(III). As our awareness of the rising toxicity of Cr increases, it is necessary to develop new and advanced strategies to mitigate this toxicity in the environment. Several physicochemical methods have been developed but these techniques are expensive and are not readily applicable to large contaminated zones. This chapter provides an overview of the concepts of Cr biogeochemistry, bioavailability and integrated risk management. The physicochemical factors, speciation and toxicity have been discussed with special emphasis on the remediation methods due to the complex reactions associated with Cr toxicity mitigation. Furthermore, this study identified systematically the future needs for understanding Cr biogeochemistry and low-cost remediation methods.

Chromium contamination and its risk management in complex environmental settings

The rate of hexavalent chromium reduction by soil humic substances (SHSs) was investigated in aqueous solutions where the temperature, ionic strength, background electrolyte, [Fe(III)], and [Cr(III)] were independently varied. Rate experiments were conducted with an excess of SHS over Cr(VI). An Arrenhius plot for the reduction of Cr(VI) by a soil fulvic acid and a soil humic acid indicates that the activation enthalpies for oxidation of these substances are nearly the same (63 ± 1 and 61 ± 3 kJ mol-1, respectively) and the activation entropies are significantly different (−160 ± 5 and −203 ± 9 J mol-1 K-1, respectively). Rates of reduction are not significantly altered due to changes in either background electrolyte or ionic strength. The presence of Cr(III) slightly inhibits the rate of reduction by soil humic acid, but not that of soil fulvic acid. Identification and geochemical modeling of processes controlling leaching of Cr(VI) and other major elements from chromite ore processing residue

Chromite ore processing residue occurs at over 130 sites in Hudson County, New Jersey. Many of these sites are in urban residential areas. This waste is a result of 70 years of chromate and bichromate chemical manufacturing. At least 15% of the sites contain total chromium concentrations greater than 10,000 mg/kg, with hexavalent content ranging from about 1 to 50%. Continuing leaching of this waste results in yellow-colored surface water runoff and yellow deposits on the soil surface and inside basement walls. The chemistry, environmental fate, health effects, and human exposure potentials for this waste are described.
