The recording and 3D modelling of complex archaeological sites is usually associated with high capital and logistical costs, because the data acquisition must be performed by specialists using expensive surveying sensors (i.e., terrestrial laser scanners, robotic total stations and/or ground-penetrating radar). This paper presents a novel, low-cost, user-friendly photogrammetric tool for generating high-resolution and scaled 3D models of complex sites. The results obtained with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry of an archaeological site indicate that this approach is semi-automatic, inexpensive and effective, and that it guarantees quality.

The archaeology of recent traumatic events, such as genocides, mass political killings and armed conflict, is inevitably controversial. This is also the case for the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), where the incipient archaeology of the confrontation is marked by bitter debates: Should this conflicting past be remembered or forgotten? Which version of the past is going to be remembered? What are the best politics of memory for a healthy democracy? The archaeologies of the war face manifold problems: the lack of interest in academia, which fosters amateurism; the great divide between public and scientific practice; the narrow perspectives of some undertakings; the lack of coordination among practitioners, and the threats to the material remains of the war. An integrated archaeology of the conflict, which helps to make things public, is defended here.

The Archaeology of ethnicity: constructing identities in the past and present.

Plain language summary In this work, we present 16 directional and 27 intensity high-quality values from Iberia Moreover, we have updated the Iberian archeomagnetic catalogue published more than 10years ago with a considerable increase in the database This has led to a notable improvement of both temporal and spatial data distribution A full vector paleosecular variation curve from 1000 BC to 1900 AD has been developed using high-quality data within a radius of 900km from Madrid A hierarchical bootstrap method has been followed for the computation of the curves The most remarkable feature of the new curves is a notable intensity maximum of about 80T around 600 BC, which has not been previously reported for the Iberian Peninsula We have also analyzed the evolution of the paleofield in Europe for the last three thousand years and conclude that the high maximum intensity values observed around 600 BC in the Iberian Peninsula could respond to the same feature as the Levantine Iron Age Anomaly, after travelling westward through Europe Knowledge of the Earth's magnetic field plays an important role on the understanding of its dynamics By measuring certain rocks or archeological objects from around the world, we can determine the field's shape and intensity in former times Knowing its evolution is essential to understand how this field is generated, how it has varied through time and how it may behave in the future In this work, we present new measurements of the magnetic field from the Iberian Peninsula that provide useful constraints on the magnetic field for archeological times that currently lack information We have updated the compilation of Iberian data for the last 3,000years and calculated a new reference curve for the magnetic field for this region We have found that the magnetic field was particularly intense in the Iberian Peninsula about 2,600 years ago By comparing this result with data from Europe and the Middle East, we observe that this high intensity has been moving from east to west through southern Europe This feature is probably related with the rapid intensity change (the geomagnetic spike) recently discovered in the Levantine region

Updated Iberian Archeomagnetic Catalogue: New Full Vector Paleosecular Variation Curve for the Last Three Millennia

A general overview of the study of the Celts in the Iberian Peninsula is offered from a critical perspective. First, we present a brief history of research and the state of research on ancient written sources, linguistics, epigraphy and archaeological data. Second, we present a different hypothesis for the "Celtic" genesis in Iberia by applying a multidisciplinary approach to the topic. Finally, on the one hand an analysis of the main archaeological groups (Celtiberian, Vetton, Vaccean, the Castro Culture of the northwest, Asturian-Cantabrian and Celtic of the southwest) is presented, while on the other hand we propose a new vision of the Celts in Iberia, rethinking the meaning of "Celtic" from a European perspective.

The emergence of ethnic groups during the Iron Age is a process which begins to be known. The potential of material culture as an indicator of ethnic identity constitutes a difficult avenue of research, but one with future. The exploration of relationships between ethnicity and material culture is considered for the Vettones, one of the most famous prerroman people in Western Iberia. The study analyses two basic elements, zoomorphic stone sculptures and combed pottery, and shows how both were probably used as markers of ethnic identity. Until recently, the zoomorphic sculpture of the West Meseta has been studied typologically, and therefore out of the cultural context in which it was produced.
This paper is concerned with the zoomorphic sculpture in the Valle del Ambles (Avila). We consider the sculptures as an index of economic value —cattle— and by studying their spatial distribution, we propose that they were used as landmarks or as delimiting critical resources —pasture— the explotation of which could have been organized by the elites of the Second Iron Age communities living in the valley.
