Fingerprint attendance system aims to automate the attendance procedure of an educational institution using biometric technology. This will save time wasted on calling out names and it gives a fool-proof method of attendance marking. A hand-held device is used to mark the attendance without the intervention of teacher. The device can be passed and students can mark attendance during the lecture time. Students would be made to place their finger over the sensor so as to mark their presence in the class. It can communicate with a host computer using its USB interface. This device operates from a rechargeable battery. GUI application in host computer helps the teacher to manage the device and attendance.

Fingerprint attendance system for classroom needs

Water scarcity and water stress issues pose a serious threat to the global population. The traditional way of manual meter reading is furthermore inconvenient and time consuming, and it wastes resources. This method is also unable to manage the sustainable water resources effectively since it requires efficient, accurate and reliable monitoring techniques that enable the utilities sector and consumers to know the level of water consumption in real-time. Real-time smart water meters that can be monitored by the user are essential and constitute a key component of the water management system. A smart watermonitoring system will make users mindful of their water consumption and help them to reduce their water usage. At the same time, users will be alerted to abnormal water usage to reduce water loss. This paper introduces the water management system based on wireless sensor networks (WSN). The system uses the IEEE 802.15.4 standard embedded in ContikiOS LibCoAP as an open-source application to create a robust and intelligent system. Visualisation and monitoring of the system is achieved following the development of a web-based system and through Pandora FMS.

Smart water meter system for user-centric consumption measurement

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to transform everyday physical objects into an interconnected ecosystem with digital data accessible anywhere and anytime. “Things” in IoT are embedded with sensing, processing, and actuating capabilities and cooperate in providing smart and innovative services autonomously. The rapid spread of IoT services arises different security vulnerabilities that need to be carefully addressed. Several emerging and promising technologies and techniques are introduced to improve the security of IoT. This paper aims to provide an up-to-date vision of the current research topics related to IoT security. Initially, we introduce common elements and protocols of IoT to demystify the origins of threats in IoT. Then, we propose a taxonomy of IoT attacks and analyze the security vulnerabilities of IoT at different layers. Subsequently, we provide a comparison of recent security schemes based on emerging solutions including fog computing, edge computing, software-defined networking (SDN), blockchain, lightweight cryptography, homomorphic and searchable encryption, and machine learning. Finally, security challenges are discussed and future directions are highlighted for future interested researchers.

Recent Security Trends in Internet of Things: A Comprehensive Survey

In today's era regardless of the field of study or preference for defining data (quantitative, qualitative), accurate data collection is essential for maintaining the integrity of research. Selection of appropriate method and the device used for data acquisition reduces chances of errors occurring. Proposed system has a small handy hardware, a remote server and software components for acquisition of data manually or from sensors electronically. It could be used in doing survey's, closed loop control monitoring systems in industries, hospitals, attendance management system of schools and colleges etc. This paper presents a design and framework for taking attendance in schools and colleges, for making troublesome process of taking and compiling of attendance simple and efficient. As its targeted users are educational institutes where there is a requirement of affordable, user friendly, portable, energy efficient and secure automated system. Hence this prototype provides an amalgamated solution for replacing existing conventional attendance system with embedded attendance system. Main advantages are its very low cost, small size, efficient with low energy consumption.

Attendance management system

The application of biometric recognition in personal authentication enables the growth of this technology to be employed in various domains. The implementation of biometric recognition systems can be based on physical or behavioral characteristics, such as the iris, voice, fingerprint, and face. Currently, the attendance tracking system based on biometric recognition for education sectors is still underutilized, thus providing a good opportunity to carry out interesting research in this area. As evidenced in a typical classroom, educators tend to take the attendance of their students by using conventional methods such as by calling out names or signing off an attendance sheet. Yet, these types of methods are proved to be time consuming and tedious, and sometimes, fraud occurs. As a result, significant progress had been made to mark attendance automatically by making use of biometric recognition. This progress enables a new and more advanced biometric-based attendance system being developed over the past ten years. The setting-up of biometric-based attendance systems requires both software and hardware components. Since the software and hardware sections are too broad to be discussed in one paper, this literature survey only provides an overview of the types of hardware used. Emphasis is then placed on the microcontroller platform, biometric sensor, communication channel, database storage, and other components in order to assist future researchers in designing the hardware part of biometric-based attendance systems.

Biometric-Based Attendance Tracking System for Education Sectors: A Literature Survey on Hardware Requirements

Control overhead is a very important indicator for measure performance of ZigBee routing protocol. More control overhead will add network energy consumption and reduce network survival time. By analyzing the architecture features of ZigBee network and the key technologies of network layer, researching ZigBee routing protocol based on ZigBee Cluster-Tree network architecture, an improved routing algorithm of control overhead is proposed. The algorithm uses Cluster-Tree parameter of ZigBee network and network addresses of destination nodes to control the transmission range and restrict its transmission direction. The algorithm performance is simulated by NS-2 simulator. The simulating results indicate that control overhead is reduced about a half without influencing packet delivery ratio and path length of ZigBee network.

Study on ZigBee network architecture and routing algorithm

Aiming at the disadvantages of traditional wire attendance system, a design method of wireless fingerprint attendance system based on ZigBee technology is proposed. The system includes terminal fingerprint acquisition module and attendance management module in computer. It can realize automatically such functions as information acquisition of fingerprint, processing, wireless transmission, fingerprint matching, and attendance management. Considering the fact and topology of ZigBee network, the system designs wireless local area network which is cluster tree network. To resolve the problem of time delay when the image is transmitted by ZigBee technology, the traditional transmission mode is improved. The experiment results show the transmission time is saved over one third and transmission efficiency is improved greatly. It realized low-cost and high-performance wireless fingerprint attendance function, which provided a new wireless fingerprint attendance system for enterprises and institutions.
