Feeding a rising population of currently 7.8 billion people globally requires efficient agriculture, which is preferably sustainable. Today, farmers are largely dependent on synthetic fungicides to avoid food losses caused by fungal diseases. However, the extensive use of these has resulted in the emergence of fungicide-resistant pathogens and concerns have been raised over the residual effects on the environment and human health. In this regard, biocontrol agents (BCAs) have been proposed as an alternative to standard fungicides but their disease management capacity is usually incomplete and heavily relies on uncontrollable environmental conditions. An integrated approach combining BCAs with fungicides, which is the focus of this review, is put forward as a way to reduce the fungicide doses to manage plant diseases and thereby their residue on harvested crops. In addition, such a strategy of combining antifungal treatments with different modes of action reduces the selection pressure on pathogens and thereby the chances of resistance development. However, to allow its large-scale implementation, further knowledge is needed, comprising timing, number and interval of repeated BCA applications and their compatibility with fungicides. The compatibility of BCAs with fungicides might differ when applied in a mixture or when used in alternation.

Combining Biocontrol Agents with Chemical Fungicides for Integrated Plant Fungal Disease Control

A major current challenge is to increase the food production while preserving natural resources. Agricultural practices that enhance the productivity and progressively improve the soil quality are relevant to face this challenge. Trichoderma species are widely used in agriculture to stimulate the plant growth and to control different pathogens affecting crops, representing useful tools for sustainable food production. This mini-review summarizes applications of Trichoderma strains in agriculture to control fungal pathogens, nematodes and insects, the involved biocontrol mechanisms, efficacy and inoculation forms in greenhouse, field and post-harvest conditions. Aspects of Trichoderma handling that influence on biocontrol efficacy such as preventive treatments, frequency of applications and delivery methods are discussed. Strategies useful to improve the antagonistic performance such as the use of native strains, protoplast fusion, formulation, growth on pathogen cell wall medium and combination with other antagonists in integrated treatments are discussed. This mini-review provides practical knowledge to design safe and optimal biocontrol strategies based on Trichoderma and pose challenges to expand its antagonist performance.

Trichoderma as biological control agent: scope and prospects to improve efficacy

The use of synthetic fungicide needs to be gradually reduced because of its adverse effect on human health and the environment. An integrated approach combining fungicides with biological control agents (BCAs) can be used to reduce the fungicide doses, thereby minimizing the risks associated with chemical fungicides. In this study, the combined application of a BCA Trichoderma and a fungicide hymexazol was used to manage the cowpea wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum. The Trichoderma SC012 strain, which is resistant to hymexazol, was screened out and identified as T. asperellum. T. asperellum SC012 showed hyperparasitism to F. oxysporum and could penetrate and encircle the hyphae of pathogen on a medium amended or not with hymexazol. When combined with hymexazol, the population density in the rhizosphere soil of cowpea showed no significant difference compared with the treatment Trichoderma used alone. When the concentration of T. asperellum SC012 or hymexazol was halved, their combined application could control cowpea wilt disease more effectively than their individual use. The findings showed that the combination of Trichoderma and hymexazol could reduce the use of chemical fungicide, which is eco-friendly and may be an important part of integrated control of Fusarium wilt in cowpea.

The Combination of a Biocontrol Agent Trichoderma asperellum SC012 and Hymexazol Reduces the Effective Fungicide Dose to Control Fusarium Wilt in Cowpea

Many Trichoderma species are cosmopolitan and widespread free-living fungi in various ecological environment, and many are economically important in the fields of agriculture and industry. However, carbon metabolism profiles of Trichoderma species have not been characterized in detail. In this study, Biolog FF MicroPlates were used to contrast carbon utilization and the differences among five Trichoderma species, each representing a unique phenotype. Their metabolic abilities varied greatly. Species producing cellulases and chitinases and with phosphate-solubilizing activities exhibited high efficiency of substrate utilization, whereas low efficiency was shown by saline-alkaline-tolerant species that metabolized simple carbon sources. Species producing cellulases at high levels may be specified to decompose and assimilate cellulose and hemicellulose in woody substrates, and those producing chitinases may have mycoparasitic roles. Species with plant growth-promoting traits are good at uptake of exudates from plant roots. Overall, metabolic models reflect nutritional adaptation of Trichoderma to diverse niches in nature.
