A reinforcing structure 9 for a wind turbine blade is in the form of an elongate stack 27 of layers 31 of pultruded fibrous composite strips supported within a U-shaped channel 28. The length of each layer 31 is slightly different to create a taper at the ends of the stack; the centre of the stack 27 has five layers 31, and each end has a single layer 31. The ends of each layer 31 are chamfered, and the stack is coated with a thin flexible pultruded fibrous composite strip 33 extending the full length of the stack 27. The reinforcing structure 9 extends along a curved path within the outer shell of the blade. During configuration of the blade components within a mould 37, the reinforcing structure 9 is introduced into the mould 37 by sliding the channel 28 along the surface of an elongate wedge 29 within the mould 37 along the curved path. The wedge 29 is oriented along its length at an angle depending on the curvature of the path at that position so as to guide the reinforcing structure 9 into the desired position. The regions of the outer shell of the blade on either side of the reinforcing structure 9 are filled with structural foam 17, and the reinforcing structure 9 and the foam 17 are both sandwiched between an inner skin 18 and an outer skin 19.

The invention also comprises a procedure for the manufacture of the structural beam which, amongst other stages, includes the application of the layers mentioned onto a mould and the beam curing process.

The invention provides a method of manufacturing a wind turbine blade comprising a spar and at least one airfoil section, where both the spar and the airfoil section comprise an outer surface which forms part of an aerodynamically active surface of the blade. The method comprises steps of providing a support structure, placing the spar at the support structure, providing a clamp adapted to be fixed to the outer surface of both the spar and the airfoil section, arranging the airfoil section relative to the spar, fixing the clamp to the outer surface of the spar and the airfoil section, and assembling the at least one airfoil section an the spar by a process including adhesion.

It is intended to provide a wind turbine blade with superior aerodynamic characteristics and rigidity, a wind turbine generator equipped with the wind turbine blade, and a method of designing the wind turbine blade. The wind turbine blade 1 is provided with a blade tip part 2 , a blade root part 4 connected to a hub 112 , and an airfoil part 6 disposed between the blade tip part 2 and the blade root part 4 . The airfoil part 6 includes a flatback airfoil 10 with a blunt trailing edge 8 at least in an area in a longitudinal direction of the wind turbine blade 1 where a blade thickness ratio X is 40% to 50%. X indicates a ratio of a maximum thickness t MAX to a chord length L C . In the area where the blade thickness ratio X is 40% to 50%, the flatback airfoil has a trailing edge thickness ratio Y which is 5% to Y H %, Y indicating a ratio of a trailing edge thickness t TE to the maximum thickness t MAX and Y H has a relationship of Y H =1.5X−30 with the blade thickness ratio X.

In the method of manufacturing the wind turbine blade having the spar cap as a main structural member of the blade disposed between the layers constituting the outer skin or disposed on the inner side of the outer skin, the spar cap is formed as a separate piece from the outer skin, and the spar cap, dry fiber fabrics for the layers constituting the outer skin, and a sandwich core member are collectively impregnated with resin under a vacuum process.
