Bariatric Surgery for Weight Loss and Glycemic Control in Nonmorbidly Obese Adults with Diabetes: A Systematic Review
Melinda Maggard-Gibbons,Margaret Maglione,Masha J. Livhits,Brett Ewing,Alicia Ruelaz Maher,Jianhui Hu,Zhaoping Li,Paul G. Shekelle +7 more
TL;DR: Current evidence suggests that, when compared with nonsurgical treatments, bariatric surgical procedures in patients with a BMI of 30 to 35 and diabetes are associated with greater short-term weight loss and better intermediate glucose outcomes, and evidence is insufficient to reach conclusions about the appropriate use of bariatric surgery in this population.

Margaret Maglione,Alicia Ruelaz Maher,Jianhui Hu,Zhen Wang,Roberta M. Shanman,Paul G. Shekelle,Beth Roth,Lara Hilton,Marika J Suttorp,Brett Ewing,Aneesa Motala,Tanja Perry +11 more
TL;DR: This review was an update of a previous report (see Other Publications of Related Interest) and only papers published in English were considered for inclusion.
Bariatric Surgery and Nonsurgical Therapy in Adults With Metabolic Conditions and a Body Mass Index of 30.0 to 34.9 kg/m2
Margaret Maglione,Melinda Maggard Gibbons,Masha J. Livhits,Brett Ewing,Jianhui Hu,Alicia Ruelaz Maher,Zhaoping Li,Tanja Perry,Paul G. Shekelle +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors systematically review the scientific evidence on efficacy, safety, and comparative effectiveness of various types of bariatric surgery for treating adult patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30.0 to 34.9 kg/m2 and diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and compare effectiveness of surgery versus nonsurgical interventions in this population.
