This text, drawn from the author's lectures at the University of California at Berkeley, is intended as a textbook for a one-term course in basic ring theory. The material covered includes the Wedderburn-Artin theory of semi-simple rings, Jacobson's theory of the radical representation theory of groups and algebras, prime and semi-prime rings, primitive and semi-primitive rings, division rings, ordered rings, local and semi-local rings, and perfect and semi-perfect rings. By aiming the level of writing at the novice rather than at the expert, and by stressing the role of examples and motivation, the author has produced a text which is suitable not only for use in a graduate course, but also for self-study by other interested graduate students. Numerous exercises are also included. This graduate textbook on rings, fields and algebras is intended for graduate students in mathematics.

An introduction to noncommutative noetherian rings

Let T be a set of elements in a ring A. The set T is right permutable if for any a ∈ A and t ∈ T, there exist b ∈ A, u ∈ T such that au = tb. A multiplicative set in a ring A is any subset T of A such that 1 ∈ T,0 ∉ T and T is closed under multiplication. A completely prime ideal in a ring A is any proper ideal B such that A\B is a multiplicative set (i.e. A/Bis a domain). A minimal prime ideal (resp. minimal completely prime ideal) in a ring A is any prime (resp. completely prime) ideal P such that P contains no properly any other prime ideal (resp. completely prime ideal) of A. Let I be any proper ideal of a ring A. The set of all elements a ∈ A such that a + I is a regular element of A/I is denoted by c(I). In particular, c(0) is the set of all regular elements of A.

Rings of quotients

This paper surveys some surprising applications of a lemma characterizing normal families of meromorphic functions on plane domains. These include short and efficient proofs of generalizations of (i) the Picard Theorems, (ii) Gol’dberg’s Theorem (a meromorphic function on C which is the solution of a first-order algebraic differential equation has finite order), and (iii) the Fatou-Julia Theorem (the Julia set of a rational function of degree d ≥ 2 is the closure of the repelling periodic points). We also discuss Bloch’s Principle and provide simple solutions to some problems of Hayman connected with this principle. Over twenty years ago, on the way to a partial explication of the phenomenon known as Bloch’s Principle, I proved a little lemma characterizing normal families of holomorphic and meromorphic functions on plane domains [68]. Over the years, the lemma has grown and, in dextrous hands, proved amazingly versatile, with applications to a wide variety of topics in function theory and related areas. With the renewed interest in normal families (arising largely from the important role they play in complex dynamics), it seems sensible to survey some of the most striking of these applications to the one-variable theory, with the aim of making this technique available to as broad an audience as possible. That is the purpose of this report. One pleasant aspect of the theory is that judicious application of the lemma often leads to proofs which seem almost magical in their brevity. In such cases, we have made no effort to resist the temptation to write out complete proofs. Hardly anything beyond a basic knowledge of function theory is required to understand what follows, so the reader is urged to take courage and plough on through. And now we turn to our tale. 1. Pseudo core inverses in rings with involution

The core inverse for a complex matrix was introduced by O. M. Baksalary and G. Trenkler. D. S. Rakic, N. C. Dincic and D. S. Djordjevic generalized the core inverse of a complex matrix to the case of an element in a ring. They also proved that the core inverse of an element in a ring can be characterized by five equations and every core invertible element is group invertible. It is natural to ask when a group invertible element is core invertible. In this paper, we will answer this question. Let R be a ring with involution, we will use three equations to characterize the core inverse of an element. That is, let a, b ∈ R. Then a ∈ R# with a# = b if and only if (ab)* = ab, ba2 = a, and ab2 = b. Finally, we investigate the additive property of two core invertible elements. Moreover, the formulae of the sum of two core invertible elements are presented.

New characterizations for core inverses in rings with involution

A ring R with identity is called “clean” if every element of R is the sum of an idempotent and a unit, and R is called “strongly clean” if every element of R is the sum of an idempotent and a unit that commute. Strongly clean rings are “additive analogs” of strongly regular rings, where a ring R is strongly regular if every element of R is the product of an idempotent and a unit that commute. Strongly clean rings were introduced in Nicholson (1999) where their connection with strongly π-regular rings and hence to Fitting's Lemma were discussed. Local rings and strongly π-regular rings are all strongly clean. In this article, we identify new families of strongly clean rings through matrix rings and triangular matrix rings. For instance, it is proven that the 2 × 2 matrix ring over the ring of p-adic integers and the triangular matrix ring over a commutative semiperfect ring are all strongly clean.
