This paper reviewed all the possible interfacing communication protocols for remote terminal unit (RTU). Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is a central station that can communicate with other network using the protocol. Fundamentally, the architectures of all networks are based on the seven layers of open system interconnection (OSI) and International Standard Organization (ISO). The objective of designing the protocols is to check the status of all the input and output field devices and send the report according to that status. The corresponding protocol and communication parameters between the connecting devices will be included in designing a complex SCADA system. The available protocols to develop the communication of RTU are Modbus/ASCII, distributed network protocol (DNP3), controller area network (CAN), International Electro-technical Commission (IEC 60870), and transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP).

Controlling Methods of General Purpose Input/Output for Embedded PowerPC Realtime System

Under the impetus of industrial internet of things and smart manufacturing applications, realizing the development and deployment of decentralized industrial controller networks is crucial. This paper designed an industrial controller network gateway, combined with the Grafcet virtual machine, for rapid development and deployment with distributed decentralized controller equipment. A gateway architecture with three microcontrollers for communication protocol management, Modbus device management, and real-time data collection and monitoring engines, respectively, was proposed in this study. The communication protocol management engine is responsible for transmission between the gateway and cloud system, thereby providing an implementation mechanism for cyber/physical system. The device management engine uses Modbus RTU to communicate with the underlying PLC controller. This engine comprises an IEEE1588 time synchronization protocol that provides PLC controller time stamping and synchronization mechanisms. The real-time data collection and monitoring engine is in charge with the data sorting management function, which is used to make the database management have efficient data query function. Finally, experiments were conducted on the basis of multiple PLC controllers and robotic arms motion control to validate this industrial controller network functional usability and performance.

Intelligent Industrial Controller Network Based on Modbus Fieldbus

Modbus that is widely used in industry is a complete standard and open communication network protocol. In metallurgy, manufacturing, infrastructure construction, power, water supply, transportation and other industrial fields, Modbus is able to achieve the goals of process control and data acquisition, and has become the modern industry's unanimously recognized industrial communication criterion. The certain practical value can be shown in whole system that is simple in structure, complete in function, and can be directly generated. Take Freescale Corporation PowerQUICC II technology's high-end dual-core chip MPC8248 processor as the core, an embedded data acquisition and the monitoring system platform based on PowerPC and CAN bus has been designed and developed in this paper, which can solve the high demand data acquisition and monitor, network and communication effectively for the applications of electrical power system. At the same time, the data can be transferred by Ethernet communication interface to the remote monitoring systems such as DAS or DCS for further analysis, processing and storage after being analyzed and processed by the platform. Research and design of embedded data acquisition and monitoring system based on PowerPC and CAN Bus

Industrial Ethernet is a new technology for industrial network communications developed in recent years. In the field of industrial automation in China, EPA is the first standard accepted and published by ISO, and has been included in the fourth edition IEC61158 Fieldbus of NO.14 type. According to EPA standard, Field devices such as industrial field controller, actuator and other instruments are all able to realize communication based on the Ethernet standard. The Atmel AT91RM9200 embedded development board and open source embedded Linux are used to develop an information inquiry service system of EPA protocol based on embedded ARM Linux in this paper. The system is capable of designing an EPA Server program for EPA data acquisition procedures, the EPA information inquiry service is available for programs in local or remote host through Socket interface. The EPA client can access data and information of other EPA equipments on the EPA network when it establishes connection with the monitoring port of the server.
