The extraction of Pt(IV) by Aliquat 336 (R3R'N+Cl−) in dodecane modified with 4% dodecanol from hydrochloric acid solutions has been investigated. The analysis of metal distribution data by numerical calculations suggested the formation of the species (R3R'N+)2PtCl6 2− in the organic phase with formation constant log β=5.26±0.02. The results obtained on Pt(IV) distribution have been implemented in a solid supported liquid membrane system, being NaClO4 solutions the most effective to strip the metal from the organic solution. Influence of membrane composition and metal concentration on platinum transport have also been studied.

SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF Pt(IV) BY ALIQUAT 336 AND ITS APPLICATION TO A SOLID SUPPORTED LIQUID MEMBRANE SYSTEM

The carrier-mediated transport of gold(III), platinum(IV) and palladium(II) through a supported liquid membrane (SLM) has been investigated by the use of trioctylamine (TOA) as a mobile carrier. The transport behavior of precious metals greatly depended on the carrier concentration. At a low TOA concentration, Au(III) was preferentially transported across an SLM from the HCl feed solution to the HClO 4 product solution. The transport of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was enhanced with increasing carrier concentration. The separation factor of Au(III) over Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was improved with increasing concentration of HCl in the feed solution

Separation and Recovery of Gold, Platinum and Palladium by a Trioctylamine Liquid Membrane

Liquid-liquid extraction and the membrane transport of gold(III) have been studied using trioctylamine (TOA). Gold(III) was efficiently extracted with TOA from an HCl solution. The extracted AuIII was instantaneously stripped by an HClO4 or HNO3 solution, and subsequently re-extracted at a slow rate. The transport of AuIII was performed across a supported liquid membrane (SLM) impregnated with TOA from an HCl feed solution into an HClO4 product solution. Most of the AuIII was transported with a reasonable enrichment factor, closely corresponding to the feed-to-product volume ratio.
