Based on the promising results of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in various abdominal procedures, this study aimed to investigate its effect on postoperative pain and early outcome after laparoscopic bariatric procedures. Patients with morbid obesity were randomly assigned to one of two equal groups; group I had US-guided TAP block upon completion of the bariatric procedure and before recovery from general anesthesia and group II did not have TAP block. All procedures were performed laparoscopically with a standardized five-trocar technique. Ninety-two patients of a mean age of 34.7 years and mean BMI of 49.5 kg/m2 were included. The mean pain score in group I was significantly lower than group II at 1 and 6 h postoperatively, whereas no significant differences in pains scores at 12 and 24 h between the two groups were observed. Eight patients in group I required rescue opioid analgesia within the first 24 h postoperatively, compared with 24 patients in group II (P < 0.0001). The postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) score at 24 h was significantly lower in group I than group II. Group I required a significantly shorter time to full ambulation and to pass flatus compared with group II. Hospital stay was similar in the two groups. Using US-guided TAP block in adjunct with laparoscopic bariatric surgery managed to achieve lower pain scores, lower opioid requirements, lower PONV scores, earlier ambulation, shorter time to pass flatus, and comparable hospital stay and complication rate to the control group.

A Scoping Review of Nursing's Contribution to the Management of Patients with Pain and Opioid Misuse.

BACKGROUND In an opioid epidemic that is imposing heavy health burdens on individuals, families and health systems, nurses are the main front-line caregivers in the battle against the unrelenting increase in opioid medication misuse. Yet, little research has been conducted on nurses' opinions and knowledge surrounding this issue worldwide and in Israel as well. OBJECTIVES To evaluate Israeli nurses' attitudes, their knowledge about opioid use and misuse, their perception of institutional support, and their perception of their role and self-efficacy in preventing and treating opioid misuse. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS The data were collected through an electronic questionnaire from 414 Israeli registered nurses using the Qualtrics platform for on-line surveys. RESULTS The majority of the sample perceived their role positively, held positive attitudes toward people with opioid addiction, and were willing to take care of persons who misused opioids. Nurses reported low scores on knowledge, perceived institutional support, and self-efficacy relating to the issues surrounding opioid pain medication use and misuse. CONCLUSIONS The results clearly indicate a lack of up-to-date knowledge among nurses concerning opioids use. This situation must be urgently corrected through revisiting the subject of opioids across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing nursing education programs. Improved knowledge, combined with a supportive organizational culture, should strengthen nursing care provided to this frequently neglected patient population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Broad insight into nurses' attitudes, their level of knowledge about opioid use and misuse, and their perceptions of their own role in preventing and treating such misuse are essential for creating targeted, relevant educational interventions for nurses with the aim of providing safe and effective opioid treatment for individuals with pain.

Attitudes, perceptions, self-efficacy and knowledge levels of Israeli nurses in relation to opioid misuse: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND
Health promotion is an important strategy for companies as it helps identify risks at work and the health needs of workers. Nursing, as a profession committed to promoting decent work, plays an important role in this strategy.


OBJECTIVE
This manuscript aims to discuss the experience of the Nursing Service in the construction of knowledge about work, to support actions in favor of health promotion.


METHODS
This is a discussion article in the field of occupational health conducted at a Research Center in the nuclear area.


RESULTS
Based on actions centered on guidelines on lifestyles and scheduling visits to the workplace, with the Internal Public Health Commission, limitations were identified that allowed us to discuss and understand the role of nurses as occupational health professionals.


CONCLUSION
Knowing the work and understanding it in its specificities and limitations of the production process has allowed to expand the possibilities of action with workers to transform working conditions and promote health.

The nurse and the promotion of workers' health from the perspective of the centrality of work.

Background: Health hazards are a neglected public health issue among nursing students in developing countries. This has exposed nursing students in developing countries to various forms of hazards which had negative consequences on their wellbeing and performance at work. Aim of study: Was to assess practical training health hazards among secondary technical nursing students. Research design: A descriptive design was used to carry out this study. Setting: This study was conducted at two secondary Technical Nursing Schools in Benha City. Sample: Convenient sample included 222 nursing students. Tools: Two tools were used in this study, Tool I: A structured interviewing questionnaire to assess nursing students socio demographic characteristics, practical training health hazards facing nursing students, health problems that acquired after joining with secondary technical nursing schools and nursing students knowledge regarding practical training health hazards and protective measures Tool II: Observational checklist to assess nursing students practices toward protective measures. Results: 67.6% of studied nursing students exposed to stress as psychological hazards, 64.4% of them exposed to noise as physical hazards in addition to, 53.6% of them exposed to chemical hazards as latex powder that found in the gloves and 44.1% of them exposed to ergonomic hazards as carrying tools and supplies. 87.4% of them had back pain and neck pain, 45.5% &42.8% had stress and skin allergy respectively. 26.1% of them had good knowledge regarding practical training health hazards and protective measures. 77.9% of them had satisfactory practices. Conclusion: There were highly statistical significance relation between total knowledge level and total practices level. Recommendation: Develop and implementing health education and training programs to upgrade the nursing students' knowledge and practice toward health hazards associated with practical training.

Practical Training Health Hazards among Secondary Technical Nursing Students

The opioid epidemic is a national public health crisis. It began with the misuse of commonly used prescription opioid pain relievers and has led to the increased use of heroin and illicit fentanyl. Large-scale initiatives have begun on the federal and state level and place an emphasis on improved opioid prescribing, which have important implications for the workplace. Treatment of work injury may initiate the use of prescription opioids and result in misuse and possible overdose. Prescription drug abuse affects all aspects of society so potentially any workplace could be affected. A multifaceted approach is needed to reduce opioid morbidity and mortality and the occupational health nurse should be actively involved. The intent of this article is to provide an overview of the epidemic and its impact on health, the challenges for the workplace, and recommended strategies for the occupational health nurse to impact the problem.
