This paper analyses current opinion on the development of information literacy skills amongst adult students at tertiary institutions. It looks at the rapid changes taking place in tertiary education and in the development of lifelong learning opportunities for adults. It examines closely the concept of the adult independent learner and how information literacy contributes to this concept. It also examines the plight of there mote external students and hownew communications technologies could be used to improve their levels of information literacy.

The academic librarian is a key stakeholder in the development of Internet technologies. The profession is well positioned to promote and exploit the benefits of information networks. In recent years, this has generally meant that academic librarians have assumed the role of campus Internet trainer or instructor. The logic behind this is compelling. The role of Internet trainer will enhance the profile of the profession because it will help academics to become better users of the Internet, and therefore better able to achieve the benefits of improved access to networked information resources and services.Is this the case? This article reports on a pilot study that, amongst other things, examined the relationship between training and satisfaction with information seeking on the Internet. The outcomes suggest that academic librarians might consider shifting their emphasis from Internet training to network-based support for self-learning. An Internet Role for the Academic Librarian

UGC has established INFLIBNET centre primarily for the information and library network activities in higher education in India. The paper presented the impact of INFLIBNET in the development of university libraries in study conducted by researcher in select university libraries in U.P. The impact of INFLIBNET is measured by conducting survey in select of university libraries in Uttar Pradesh in north of India. The study reveals that majority of libraries has been using the services offered by INFLIBNET to meet their automation and e-resources requirements.

ABSTRACT By using the Australian Library History Forums (ALHF) as a lens, this paper will explore library history research in Australia and examine the value of the history of libraries and the library profession. The paper aims to encourage reflection on Australian library history – or library history in general, speculate on its value, consider the gaps in Australian library history, and advocate and encourage the exploration of these gaps. By examining the interests, priorities and values reflected in the ALHFs over time, the paper will reflect on what Australian library history has to say about collective professional and community memory, community and professional values as reflected in these histories and about changing perceptions and understandings of libraries, collections, and the place of libraries in communities. A challenge will be made for those interested in the histories of libraries and librarianship to uncover and to tell these untold stories.

Lost to Memory and Invisible Stories: Reflections on the Australian Library History Forums 1984–2019

The authors identify a new role for academic libraries in the marketing and instructional support of AARNet. They outline how the University of Newcastle Libraries, with the agreement of the University Computing Service, developed a training program using special project staff financed from research infrastructure funding. The strong response from faculty has ensured the future of the program and confirmed the authors' conviction that Libraries have a future in the promotion and user support of new communication technologies.

AARNet and the academic library: The role of the University of Newcastle Libraries in marketing and institutional support

This paper explores some of the issues thrown up by the accelerating impact of information technology and networking on higher education, with particular reference to academic libraries. It had its origins in a presentation at a University of Newcastle Library seminar for New Zealand academic librarians in Wellington on 5 July 1994, and has since been updated and rewritten. It reflects the perspective of a provincial university in which there are constant frustrations in attempting to accommodate very real and urgent needs for technology with limited financial resources. The government constantly exhorts universities to accelerate the application of information technology to maximise productivity, but it is rarely accepted that a substantial capital investment may be required over and above existing recurrent expenditure. Without additional funding our universities will have to be re-engineered to resource the innovation that is now essential to survival in the marketplace.

Academic libraries, networking and technology: some recent developments

The author reviews the careers of three of the ‘first generation’ of women librarians at the Public Library of New South Wales. He examines the lives of four of these pioneers against the bureaucratic and social context of the period. He challenges the stereotype offered in such works as Dee Garrison's Apostles of culture; the public librarian and American society and argues that these Australian prototypes were made of sterner material than the models of feminine passivity described by Garrison. In the lives of Margaret Windeyer, Maude Fitzhardinge, Nita Kibble and Ida Leeson, the author sees “strong, dynamic leaders”, and he examines their lives with the intention of offering “the perspective of one writer looking at these women in the context of their generation in order to make connections between the public and private selves”.
