The sexuality-assemblage: desire, affect, anti-humanism

Objective To review research on sexual and gender minority (SGM) families-including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual, and intersex (LGBTQAI+) families- from 2010-2020. Background Research on the SGM population has increased and diversified in the past decade. Results This paper reviews three subareas that make up the majority of research on SGM families today: (1) SGM family of origin relationships, (2) SGM intimate relationships, and (3) SGM-parent families. This review also highlights three main gaps in the existing literature: (1) a focus on same-sex and gay and lesbian families (and to a lesser extent bisexual and transgender families) and a lack of attention to the families of single SGM people as well as intersex, asexual, queer, polyamorous, and other SGM families; (2) an emphasis on white, socioeconomically advantaged SGM people and a failure to account for the significant racial-ethnic and socioeconomic diversity in the SGM population; and (3) a lack of integration of SGM experiences across the life course, from childhood to old age. Conclusion The next decade should aim to examine the full range of SGM family ties, include more vigorous examinations of race-ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and develop more robust accounts of family across the life course with novel theory and data sources across the methodological spectrum.

Sexual- and Gender-Minority Families: A 2010 to 2020 Decade in Review.

Disclosure Stress, Social Support, and Depressive Symptoms Among Cisgender Bisexual Youth

Using specific tenets from symbolic interactionism as a frame, we asked 31 African Americans (18 women and 13 men) including students as well as nonstudents, across a variety of types of relationships and ages, what marriage meant to them. Two major themes, commitment and love, emerged from qualitative content analysis of the meaning of marriage. Other themes, including partnership/friendship, trust, family, and covenant, also emerged as themes, although less frequently. The overwhelming meanings of marriage were positive, with only a few negative instances (i.e., marriage as unnecessary and not fulfilling). Supportive qualitative data are presented for each theme. We discuss implications for the meaning of marriage for African Americans.

An exploratory study of the meaning of marriage for African Americans

Using symbolic interactionism we developed an open-ended question to examine marital meaning for young adults (N = 111). Themes to emerge were love and commitment. Participants were placed into clusters: contractual (low love, high commitment), optimistic-realistic (high love, high commitment), romanticizing (high love, low commitment), and casual (low love, low commitment). We examined marital meaning and associations with reasons to delay marriage, conceptualized as relational doubts and financial concerns. Optimistic-realistic and casual individuals reported fewer relational doubts than contractual individuals. Longer relationship length was associated with fewer financial concerns for optimistic-realistic individuals when compared with all others. We conclude that although love and commitment are central to marital meaning, for some, specific pairings of these themes have implications in understanding reasons young adults delay marrying.

Associations Between Marital Meaning and Reasons to Delay Marriage for Young Adults in Romantic Relationships

Sexuality development in adolescence

Understandings of LGBT-parent families have been advanced in recent years through analyses of several important national and/or population-based data sources, yet many of the opportunities that currently exist have been unrealized. This chapter draws attention to these data sources with the hopes of prompting new research on LGBT-parent families. We consider two areas of conceptual and methodological complexity: study design and identifying LGBT-parent families. We then identify challenges when using existing large-scale data sets to study LGBT-parent families. Having discussed challenges, we then describe the advantages of using large-scale secondary data sets. In our discussion we review recent studies that have broken new ground with results that could only be achieved through the analysis of large-scale secondary data sources. Finally, we note some areas in the study of LGBT-parent families that have been particularly underexamined and for which the use of secondary data sources may provide important new possibilities. We anticipate that more large-scale data sets will include attention to LGBT-parent families, offering the potential to greatly advance our understandings of LGBT parents and their children.
