An envelope feeding and printing assembly providing for the individual, lengthwise feeding of envelopes and enabling printing thereon while said envelopes are in motion, including a plurality of print heads and a platen for imprinting the envelopes, an envelope storage bin for holding a stack of envelopes prior to printing and having a gate with a driven feed roller and a control surface defining an envelope nip leading from the bin to the print head array, transport rollers to carry envelopes from the gates to the platen, timing control means to produce timing signals corresponding to the speed of the transport rollers, envelope position sensors to sense the leading and following edges of envelopes passing through said transport rollers and to produce control signals corresponding to envelope position, and a controller to receive the timing and control signals and to control the feed roller and to control the "start time" and speed of printing of the print heads, so that envelopes may be printed seriatim and lengthwise while continuously moving. The print heads are non-sequential and staggered to permit closer line spacing and "start times" of individual lines adjusted accordingly.

Envelope addressing system adapted to simultaneously print addresses and bar codes

A document feed array comprising a pinch-roll mounted to rotate about its center to engage documents, being mounted on a cantilever-arm pivoted at a point distal from said roll-center and including an elastomeric sleeve which, alone, couples the arm to its pivot point (in operation), the sleeve comprising high-damping, durable elastomeric material adapted to accommodate thickness anomalies in said documents, yet to maximize driving contact therewith.

A document transport array, including pinch roll, which accommodates varied inter-document gaps, and varied-thickness documents, pinch roll including a moveable roll mounted on a yoke Which is spring-mounted by a spring flexure to allow this roll to be resiliently thrust away from the document path, this yoke means also including a resilient-pad absorber suspended therefrom and adapted to absorb energy and minimize motion developed normal to this path, thus enabling the moveable pinch roll to better maintain contact with a transported document.

A medium conveying apparatus has: a conveying roller shaft arranged so as to be movable vertically; a pressing member which presses the conveying roller shaft in plural positions; and an urging member which urges the pressing member toward a conveying path of a medium. The whole pressing member is pushed up when the medium is inserted and a part of the pressing member is pushed up. Since the pressing member presses the conveying roller shaft in the medium width direction with a uniform pressing force, the uniform pressing force is applied to the medium in the width direction. The occurrence of a variation in the conveying forces and the occurrence of the oblique movement of the medium can be avoided. The medium can be stabilized and conveyed with the sufficient conveying force.

A leaf thickness sensing device (1) having mounting apparatus (9, 10) for flexibly mounting the device adjacent a leaf whose thickness is to be sensed, a leaf support element (4) coupled to the mounting apparatus, a displaceable leaf abutting (6) juxtaposed with respect to and biased towards the leaf support element so as to be in firm, non-destructive abutting contact with a leaf to be releasably retained on the leaf support element; a displacement transducer element (11) responsibly coupled to the leaf abutting element and serving to generate a signal corresponding to displacement of the second element relative to the first element.

Leaf thickness sensing device

A pressure roll assembly for applying pressure forces to sheet material articles being driven by a conveyor. A pressure roll is mounted for rotation about a central axis. A longitudinally extending leaf spring has a first portion which supports the pressure roll for rotation about its central axis, and a longitudinally spaced second portion which is fixedly connected with a support member so that the leaf spring supports the pressure roll in a cantilevered condition. An axially extending shaft is disposed normal to the longitudinal axis of the leaf spring and is fixed to the support member. Means are provided for guiding the shaft for axial movement and for restraining movement of the shaft transverse to its axis. Means are further provided for adjusting the axial position of the shaft for adjusting the pressure in the nip between the pressure roll and the conveyor surface.
